Write a policy and then apply it consistently regardless of age, race, gender, etc. And you will be fine.

SO.... to answer the OP, yes, i do believe it is legal. however, doing so may have unintended consequences. and people talk. as for our situation, like i stated above, all of us in the respiratory department know exactly where it stands and nearly all of us are looking for something else, actively.

If you are in the nursing profession, my respect and admiration for you just went up immeasurably. Thank you for your service. :)

respiratory, for me. kinda like a nurse. but for your lungs. your heart, too. kidneys. brain. circulatory system. mainly your lungs, though.

Many employers have policies claiming that pay is private and threatening to punish workers who compare their pay with other workers, but that is illegal. Comparing pay and working conditions is a fundamental right of employees and is fundamental to their right to organize. So no, the employer can't keep its pay scale secret, but the employees don't have to share that information, either. It's up to the various employees if they want to share and compare their salaries.

And if employees keep it close to the vest, they will be better off in the long run. That was my point as well as it was to say that the info will be discovered when it needs to be.

At times when I have had more than one person working under my direct supervision, I saw that they got paid the same. Then I got rid of the slacker(s).

Assuming an employer isn't following the letter of the law, how would the employee really get a fair shake at contesting? Usually those who stir up issues like this are bound for the exit door no matter what.

Jumping a bit here but regarding religion and jobs, potential hires for pro-race team's might expect to answer none to honoring days of sabbath.... er, maybe Black Sabbath only!

Island, I might be the only guy on the board that genuinely likes both you and Denis. It really bothers me that you guys fight.

I'm not Denis' free lawyer. He comes from a family of lawyers here in Minneapolis. His dad was a prominent lawyer and later judge. I was a young city attorney when I was assigned to his courtroom on consecutive three week cycles in my training. I appeared before him hundreds, if not thousands of times and had trials before him. At one time in my life I thought Denis' dad was making it his personal mission to make everything hard for me. Turns out he was riding me because he had taken a liking to me. He's retired from the bench and up to a few years ago still filled in as a temporary judge when they needed a fill in. I sometimes see him on the skyways going to lunch. He's a legend up here, for good and bad, and like the Shakespeare quote, all in all a man the likes of which I'll never see again.

So when I first started posting on the board, some character claimed he was from Minneapolis and started dropping the names of all the legal greats from the last generation - people who are famous inside the community, but who you wouldn't know if you weren't in the business. He wouldn't tell me who he was until he let his last name slip. I asked if he was related to the judge and he said kind of, he was his dad. Of course, my mystery friend turned out to be Denis.

Since then he's one of the few Pelicans I've met and I like him a lot. He's a good guy and in Minnesota is considered a bit of a rogue closet Republican because he likes Dave Durrenberger and is smart enough to know that Walter Mondale might have been a good friend of his father's but he's not the person you want to run the country. Up here in these circles (and maybe in La La Land) that makes you suspect.

So anyway, his army of free lawyers doesn't include me and I long ago quit doing things for friends for free but I'm sure he has an army of family and family friends. I limit my pro bono work to posting free legal analysis here on PPOT because it's fun, I like it and sometimes I can do some good.

Knowing Denis a little, I'm sure he could put the pimp slap on a deserving fellow, but I always thought the pimp slap was more allegorical.

So there you have it.

This thread has nothing to do with anything in my life. Sometimes, I am walking down the street or driving and some random question pops into my head, like the one that this thread addresses. I do not have employees nor am I one. It does not concern my life, I was just curious. I could look it up online if I really needed to know.

And Mr. MRM is not my attorney, just a friend. My free attorneys are all in my family. Just to clear that up. Probably not real smart to include him in the stalking, though. But then again, this guy isn't known for his well thought out posts.

....

Nah...I'm right there with ya. I can only think of one person EVER on PPOT who I decided over time that I didn't "like", and that dude had some serious emotional issues imo :D! Mr. MRM, I always appreciate your analysis and input on things I don't have a clue about (just like I appreciate most everyone on PPOT point of view)...Thanks!
