Question about my father's S&W Model 66
 

My father has a S&W revolver Model 66, in stainless, completely original and unfired. Serial # ADK5174…Can any of you tell by this serial # when the gun was manufactured? From my quick search, I believe it was 1963, but I wanted to check with the Pelican braintrust. Thanks!

I'm thinking stainless Smiths came out in the early '70's.
I assume yours is pinned & recessed? And the early ones had a stainless rear sight.

Art, I checked two that were in the house. A 66 (no dash) is numbered 7K and four more digits.
Cathy's (newer) 66-2 is 249K and three more digits.

im upstairs right now so i dont have mine handy. i got mine from an OZ contract to OZ police force. sat on shelf never used and then brought back into the u.s.

i got mine new unfired(verified by nelson ford the gunsmith.com) for like $300 bucks. i called smith with serial number and it was an early 1990's contract with lock on left side.

its a stainless 4" with pretty wood grips that i ditched for some hogue combat grips.

hell of a shooter, does everything i want. most excellent with my marlin 1894 CS .357 lever action.

i had nelson ford the gunsmith.com chamfer cylinders for my speedloaders, do a trigger job, new springs blah blah samo drill i do for ALL of my smiths. and they shoot damn good and ALWAYS GO BANG!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347980576.jpg

p.s. i have found that my 4" model 66 stainless .357 and my 4" model 29 nickel .44 mag will use the same BIANCHI MILITARY HOLSTER NYLON WITH FLAP UM-84R i think the model number is.

probably one of the most versatile holsters i have ever used or owned. under left arm, cross chest, right handed left handed shooters.

the 66 is a great spoon for wifeys. load 'em down with .38's and then graduate them to 158gr .357's and yer good to go in the event of a bear/mtn lion screwing with them.

crap i paid like $1300 for that damn hk usp compact tactical .45 in the above picture, great shooter, but as far as im concerned, i'll take a .357/.44 mag any day over a .45 for when it comes down to man vs. beast.

Oops! My father just confirmed that the revolver is a S&W Model 60 with a 2" barrel, stainless with the box marked "RB" and "458". It has never been carried or fired... He thought he bought it in the early 80's...
