Parity in the Softball league

Early this year I drafted a softball team. The #2 draft pick showed up with a
bad hamstring injury. Great outfielder. I pulled him in the second inning of the first games because he couldn't get to a routine fly ball.
The commision replaced him with an equivilant replacement. A Short-stop player.
After a 10 win 10 loss season we made it through the first single elimination playoff game with the #2 draft pick outfielder back in the game at 60 percent.

Here is what is going down. Now that he is back, we in effect now have two
number two draft picks on the team. So, after being down 14 to 4 in the fifth,
we came back and won 16 to 15. A lot of sour grapes and now I am told to give up one of the two players.

The person(s) protesting will do anything to have the edge.
I talked to the commissioner today and told him "do what you need to do."

You don't get anything for winning the championship game but a T-shirt.
The SS replacement will probably refuse to go suddenly to another team and
just not play.
So, if he refuses to go to another team now that the playoffs are underway,
is that ethical?
When I say refuses... I mean, he is taken off of my sorry ass team and just won't go to the team that is crying.

You can't get away from politics even if you hide yourself in the bowels of a simple softball game.

how many games has the SS played vs the the first guy? it sounds like the SS played all season? If so, the first guy needs to sit out, not the SS.

I run a similar league. Replacement players generally must leave the team when the injured player returns.

They are occasionally allowed to stay on if there are additional reasons or exceptional circumstances, but they can NEVER play in the playoffs.

It's a fairness issue. And yes, people are very petty about beer league sports. The way to avoid that is fair rules, and stick to them.

Maybe I'm not reading it correctly, but this doesn't seem difficult or controversial.

Seems like once the original player is back in the lineup, the sub needs to step out.

I'm not sure why you think otherwise. Is it because in your view the original player is only "60% healthy?"

If so, yeah, it doesn't really work that way!

Just follow the rules. It sounds like your actually the one trying to play politics and not follow the rules.

I'm thinking a rumble in the parking lot could solve this.

The time to object is before blowing a giant lead. After that, maybe find a way to lose with some dignity. Lastly, draft-up some rules for next year that might keep a bunch of men from looking like a bunch of douches again.

Thanks for the replys.
Whatever the commisioner decides, I will go with it. I understand the rule and it keeps a team from having an advantage, like more better players than the other teams.

I played with plenty of guys like these. I called them "jerks." One thing I don't miss having hung up the spikes after a few decades of city league softball.

bingo. The injured player is back when he wants to come back, 10% or 100%. But for your teams purposes he is 100% back and the sub has to go.

I don't know what kind of pansy softball leagues you guys play on, but number one, if the original guy comes back in the outfield at 60%, he's a douche for jeopardizing the teams chances during the playoffs. Have someone sneak up behind him and cut his achilles. Two, if the original sub helped you get to the playoffs, he stays.
There's no parity in softball.

P.S. the IDEA is to be on a team with more better players.

After getting off the phone with the league commisioner... the team stays just like it is. I am relieved. We don't have a strong chance of winning the championship and the person(s) complaining realized that the replacement SS that technically
was to be removed from the team just said "ok, fine but don't throw me on another team."
True... the outfielder nursing the hamstring wasn't very "team oriented" when he came back at 60 percent.
At least I didn't make any phone calls and start some crap that would have only created more drama. Everything is peachy and my team doesn't need to know anything except kick some ass next week.
The biggest problem with this is that we are old and you can't get through a season without multiple injurys. Everything is fluid and changes week to week.
Thanks again for the input.
