1987 Carrera sale or part it out?
So this is what I landed on yesterday.
An 87 Carrera with 120k original miles,g50,new paint, nice interior etc. Never been in accident however has a salvage title.PO told me that the car had water damage 10+ years ago somewhere in texas, ran a carfax and it checked out.Apparently the car was parked, heavy rain clogged the sewers and the car ended up halfway in the water. He said the carpet had to be changed and the brain/ecu since it sits under the driver seat.I went through the car and its solid,no built up mud, rust, mold or any of that kind of thing. The car is really clean and drives great.I want to get 15k for it. So the dilemma is should I part it out or not.I know a low mileage 3.2 6-7k,the g50 3-4k,and I still have a really clean roller. heres a link to photos and a video. Any input is appreciated. photos : 1987 Carrera 911 pictures by oprah85 - Photobucket Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y39X-HOHaCw&feature=plcp http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1348544889.jpg |
I wouldn't part a solid, running car. Even with the marked title, I think you could do better than $15k.

Thanks HardDrive, thats what I was thinking to.This car is in better shape than my 82 sc what I bought 4 yeard ago for much more money.Ive seen junks with clean title and people were asking an arm and a leg for it.Usually high mileage, needs paint, mechanical work and the interior shot.
I will work on it fix a couple of little things to make it even better, like charging the AC system than I will put it for sale.I already changed the oil, plugs and the belts. |
A really nice G50 Carrera coupe can go for $25k+ depending on mileage and options. If you have a really nice G50 Carrera coupe, even with a salvage title, $15k should be no problem. There is no good reason to part a good condition running car.
A hint - try to document everything you just said about the lack of water damage. Take photos of the floor pans, underneath the car, seat bottoms, underside of the carpet, DME harness connectors, anywhere water could potentially get to and cause mold or rust. That would seriously help put a buyer's mind at ease. |
Track rat.....

Personally I'd never spend "real car" money on a salvage titled car, but that's just me. I hate to say it but you might be better off parting that one out strictly from a dollars standpoint. The market for quirky old sports cars is tough in this economy and I don't know how many buyers you'd have lining up for a $15k salvage car - even if it does look nice. Then again, you might. Maybe run a classified for a while and see if you get any bites locally (?)

you can't get full auto insurance of comp and collision on a salvage title car, only liability.........just something to think about.
|
What would this car go for with a clean title? It better be substantial higher than 15 grand. I would buy a salvage titled car if it was priced right, problem is they are never priced right.

Don't part it out! It would make an excellent daily driver (door dings - who cares?) or a track rat.
|
Just re-reading this...So you just bought this car to turn some kind of profit, which means you probably paid some where under ten. why can't I find these deals...7-8 grand and I would own it for ever. It would be a real shame to part this car. If you can get 15 thou for it more power to you, but I don't think I understand parting the drivetrain and keeping the roller...to then replace the drivetrain you just sold?

Those that doubt the value need to look at G50 Carrera prices. I see a lot of cars listed at or above $25k and selling relatively quickly. For $15k you're lucky to get a driver quality SC anymore. The days of affordable air cooled 911s seem to be drawing to a close. I bought my '70 911T for $5500 in 2003, and I remember seeing lots of driver quality SC and Carreras for $10k. Nine years later my 911T is probably a $20k car, and it's very difficult to find even a mid-year 911 for $10k. |
Well I payed a bit more than 7-8k,over 10k.But the truth is 87 and up coupes in this condition but clean title are over 22k.
Its really clean, and it would be a great driver or longhood,or widebody rsr conversion candidate. Definetly not junk or track rat category.I listed it locally and had a couple of bites so far. Will list it on ebay to over the weekend. My friend just bought a 82sc for 10k in really bad shape.Needs everyhting paint, rust, interior and some mechanical sorting.Did I mention 800$ shipping from IL t LA? |
If I didn't already have too many cars I would take it and use it as a daily beater. But my wife is already bordering on murder. Unless you want to trade it plus cash for a Maserati Coupe.:)

Salvage title is always damaged goods. That said, if you can clear $15k selling it outright, it will be much easier than parting it out. The math actually makes it tough to arrive at $15k by parting it.
I am amazed where prices have gone on the G50. It used to be $18k got you a prime example. G |
sold for 15 in 2 days.

My mom had a car totaled. Bought the car back from the ins co. Had it totaled again and received the cash under full coverage the second time. Car is still driveable and now for sale. Both ins payouts were due to cosmetic damage. Tornado and hail. |
