SKS rifle question for the Pelican Brain Trust

i am trying to sell/trade my Browning HiPower in .40SW. it is belgian made, blah blah blah, in great shape.

anyway, there is a guy that is interested in trading a chinese made SKS with amory stamp '26', unissued, still in the cosmoline, and tagged as "grade A" (whatever that means). the rifle does look very nice, for what it is, still coated in cosmoline and looks unfired, etc.. also, it is pre-ban, with the bayonet and all, if that matters. what might the value of this SKS be? i know some of you guys know a heck of a lot more than me re. gun values.

i am looking to trade/sell the browning because i just don't use it and it is too big, IMO, for conceal/carry.

TIA!

Just curious, what are you looking to get for the BHP? I could kick myself for not getting one for ~$400 a few years back.

nynor 09-27-2012 07:34 PM

i've been listing it at $700. i've had almost zero interest. no one has even made a counteroffer. it is in great shape. i paid ~$400 for it back in 1997. they don't make the HiPo in 40SW anymore, just the 9mm.

so, it would NOT be a straight across trade, in my mind, for the SKS. i am thinking the SKS + ~200.

I am no expert, but since nobody else has posted on the SKS.

Generally the Chines models are the least desirable. Higher on the list are the Yugoslavians and top are Russian and German. I do not think there is any Chinese SKS that would be valued at $700. I see them offered around $400 usually. They spiked when Obama came to office but have gone down again.

HTH - nice Browning! Why are you selling it?

i am selling because it gets no use. i haven't shot it in about a year, and it was about five years before that. trust me, i keep it clean and store it in its original case. no pitting, nothing.

i do think you are correct at $400 for the SKS.

Different country here. But at the auctions the Chinese SKS won't sell. Some of them look really nice but no one wants them. The Browning however, we would be all over it like a rash.

nynor 09-27-2012 08:05 PM

i thought people would be pretty stoked about the browning. i've maybe three emails and a couple of phone calls in about two weeks. they want to trade things like ancient rifles with tasco scopes and such.

anyway....

I don't think "lack of use" is a reason to sell a gun. I look at guns as a decent investment that can be fondled every 6 months. The Browning is never going to be worth less.

The only reason to sell is if you need $$$ for buying something else or if your safe is too small and you want to add something else you need more. ;)

Selling guns and music equipment for cash is very tough these days. Seems everyone wants to trade, but no one wants to cough up the cash. I put a firm "no trades" in a lot of my ads and still get emails asking about trades all the time.

nynor 09-27-2012 08:50 PM

i've put in the ad that i am willing to trade. still, nothing.

I would like to find an Egyptian Maadi AK47

For myself, I'd put the chinese above the yugo.
I think I saw SOG sellling the yugo at $360 (but I wouldn't give $200 for one).
Tell the guy you want two for one.

SKS is about $300... at best. A SKS-D or SKS-M would push that up to 500 or so (they take AK mags from the factory, no mods required)

Someone is going to come out very well on that deal and you will lose money!

Contact some of the guys who showed interest. IF I had money to spend I would show interest, very nice Browning! Very high quality pieces, Belgian workers at the factory do a good job! I would advise keeping the piece. Good for home defense or if you can open carry.

Stay away from the SKS!!!!

My $.02

I don't think I'd ever wanna own a Chinese SKS... I had plenty of chances to bring one home from Nam and didn't...

krystar 09-28-2012 12:09 PM
