Von Dutch VW powered motorcycle....

American Pickers purchased this unique bike. I had never heard of Von Dutch (Kenny Howard). In 1955 he built this bike. A VW car engine, Moto Guzzi forks, Honda gas tank and a Harley frame. It was cool that Big Daddy Roth (Rat Fink)had owned the bike right after Von Dutch, and the title was still in his name!

I was thinking more of an eyeball with wings, which was Von Dutch's signature logo.

I've seen that before but didn't know the story behind it...wasn't he the king of pinstriping?

He was a custom car painter, and particularly known for a style of pinstriping. There's even a mention of him in the animated movie Cars.

A bit of Von Duich trivia...he was also a talented gunsmith that is credited with making the "Mares leg" cut down Winchester Steve Mc Queen used in "Wanted: Dead of Alive."

Kinda sad when you Google Von Dutch you wind up with as many sites dedicated to his image, marketing, and clothing lines as you do regarding his deeds as a part of the Southern California car scene. Or that the Wikipedia entry is about the clothing line popularized by that "designer" Christian Audigier about 10 years ago.

Dig those hard tails with suspension seat. I'll bet that boxer in a chassis like that wallows thru a corner like a turd. Honda tank, built '55?

What a character. The guy was full of art but from what I read, full of trouble too.

Edit: I see it was built in 1966. That makes sense regarding the tank.

Von Dutch's kids sold the licensing to his moniker I don't think he was particularly close with them.
His (Ken Howard) dad was the one who designed the Bug with the hammer on the Western Exterminator logo you still see around the southland.
