Get the SIM chip from someone on another network, like T-mobile.

Plug it into your phone and see if it works...

Or go to a cell phone shop and borrow a generic "no-name" SIM chip and see if it boots up.

So I need access to ATT for the phone to be unlocked. Is that correct? I don't have service at my house.

I never removed the sim card that it came with when I bought it from Apple. I can do the restore as new phone but if I need service for it to unlock I will have to go go down the road to accomplish that, sounds silly but that's what I get for living in the freakin sticks.

Sorry for the confusing questions.

Apple actually unlocks it. ATT is just the middle man. Thats why you have to use iTunes to complete the unlock. Right now you have been authorized by ATT to allow Apple to unlock the phone. I am thinking that the process is still not complete. When you restore, the phone (containing an active valid sim card) contacts Apple for activation (the grey welcome screen on the phone). Once Apple's servers see the phone during the activation phase, it recognizes there is an unlock request and then the unlock takes place. At that point a message shows up on iTunes.

Assuming ATT remotely killed your sim card (cannot be reused), I am guessing a visit to the Apple Store can handle the rest for you. They have lots of sim cards.

Take it with you the next time you go into town. Stop by an Apple store and they can help. You will need a good signal but should have that at the store.

Ok, I'm restoring now. If I don't need an AT&T signal and only iTunes access this may work as I am hooked to Internet for the restore via iTunes. Got my fingers crossed.

Is the phone you're restoring active?

If you get a signal, can you make calls or is the service shut off?

Ok, thanks to all for your rapid responses. The phone is unlocked. Got a message on the itunes screen that it's unlocked and back to factory settings.

The email message that I got from ATT said the action was good for 24 hours so I didn't want to let that time lapse. Turns out all I needed was the itunes/internet access, not access to ATT signal as well.

Really appreciate the urgency of your replies. I think the crisis is over and the problem has been solved, once again with the support and cooperation of the Pelican brain trust.

My sincere appreciation. I owe all you guys a beer or two. Let me know if you come to the woods of upstate NY and I will pay my debt.
