I went to a gallery show of some lost Rolling Stone Kodachrome snap shots that someone bought at an estate sale and blew up. They are cool pics but nothing special in the way of rock photography, a genre that is pretty rich. Most are of the boys lounging around a pool in about 1965, possibly in Palm Springs. Somewhere in SoCal, anyways.

If you were a real Stones freak, they're more special because Brian Jones is in them. When someone told me the prices for a print, I joked, "why would I buy one of these for $1k? I can just take pictures of them with my iPhone and blow them up. It's the same thing, a print of a print."

Like any opening where you have a loft full of pretty people in the 21st century, everyone is taking photos of the party and each other with their iphones. Because this was a photo exhibit, half the people there were photographers, so it seemed. A million digital photos were snapped. Then a funny thing happened. I noticed people taking close-up photos of the wall photos. More and more as the party wound down. It was really comical but it sort of raises an intellectual property bugaboo...

Today's camera phones take such high quality photos that it has really changed life for me and most other people. I always have a good camera in my pocket or hand. Always. Plus a camcorder. I almost never have a *wish I had my camera* moment, (except of course when the space shuttle flew over my roof a couple weeks ago).

I would not have bought one of the prints even if I had the $$ to burn, I just don't love them enough. Can't see them hanging in my pad. The one in my OP was the best one, IMO, and it was at eye level so everyone was shooting it. I wonder how many people will just print it.

Interesting points about cameras. Seems to me the protocol is to not allow cameras in galleries. But what are ya gonna do? Toss everyone out?

I had jury duty a few weeks back. I saw the sign at the entrance saying "No phones with cameras." I had left mine in the car. I get in and EVERYONE has a phone. When is the last time you saw a cell phone that didn't have a camera? At the entrance people had to place cells and keys on the conveyor. The inspectors could easily have held phones for pick up at the end of the day. (Maybe it's more strictly enforced in the actual courtroom. Don't know, didn't get that far.)

I think the world has changed a little too much a little too fast. I see people fussing with their phones while life is passing right in front of them a few feet away. I sometimes go sit with some old fcuks at the donut shop and drink coffee. No one has a phone out. We notice every cool car, bike, motorcycle and hot pair of legs out on the busy street.

We don't take pics.

A buddy found a couple rolls of Kodachrome in bottom of a old gear bag last year. He developed them just to see what he had taken. I should tell him how much they may be worth.

Piracy is piracy . . .

I think there is something to be said for respecting an artist's intellectual property. But that notion may be dead nowadays.

It's dead to a lot of people. Not to me. I create it, so I value it.

BUT IF

gallery show of some lost Rolling Stone Kodachrome snap shots that someone bought at an estate sale and blew up.

WHO IS OR IS NOT THE PIRATE ???????

the original photographer had the ''rights''

but does buying stuff at a estate sale transfer those rights
I think NOT

as you can't copyright a copy !

If you owned a Ansel Adams photograph and made prints off of it and offered them up forsale you would more than likley get a letter from his/hers lawyer or they would get a judges order to seize all the prints. It's all about how much you are willing to protect your brand.

I guess you have to be a "fan". I am not getting what's so great about random pictures of the Stones before they had facial hair?

IMHO people have gone completely nuts constantly taking pictures. Is anyone actually still looking at things with their own eyes or is it "OMG - I have to take a picture of that"?. I guess a lot of it has to do with the need to post updates to FB steadily.

I have never been a fan of cameras. I often don't have one on me, even on vacations or drives that would lend themselves to picture taking. I like to take in the moment and not worry about having to capture it on "film". Nobody is going to look at them later - unless you happen to take pictures of the Stones, of course.

A valid POV. I often ponder the same thing.
