Very cool. What are your plans for it?

Rednine11 10-03-2012 01:49 PM

And I thought my 50 cc 4 stroke Saito was cool .........

vash 10-03-2012 01:50 PM

man..your idea of "toy" is much cooler than mine!!

yowza!

tevake 10-03-2012 01:58 PM

That is so cool Wayne! While watching the video, I was thinking whoa next comes the just right ultra light airplane. Then saw the model planes that they are used in.
We have some expertiese in that sport, right in your area, Here on PP OT.
What are your plans for the new toy?

Cheers Richard

That is neat. I'd drive the distance to see and hear it run.

oldE 10-03-2012 04:41 PM

Wayne,

That engine is crying out for a scale P 47 to haul through the sky!

Indeed cool.

Best
Les

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt used an 18 cylinder radial Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp.

i have clearly confused the P47 with another aircraft. my bad. perhaps i am thinking of the P40. i'll shut up now.

KNS 10-03-2012 05:24 PM

Careful Wayne, next stop is a full sized radial with an airplane attached to it. Then a visit to your local flight school...

porsche930dude 10-03-2012 05:50 PM

i was just watching vidoes of those on u-tube an hour ago! lol . there was a radial engine at a swap meet lat year for 600$ I passed it up but i think i might get it if he has it this year. Build me a cycle car or something

P40 ran a V12...

Older airplanes did run a straight 6 engine...

Hope no one puts their hand (or worse) into that prop on the radial engine. It would not be good for either of them...

Yeah, that looked like a screaming OSHA violation

Wonder what Hugh R would have to say about that! :)

tevake 10-04-2012 10:49 AM

So Wayne, what is the story of these engines? Is there some mad engineer with a very tooled up home shop turning these out?
I really like the radial, beautifully crafted.

Cheers Richard

Wayne if you like the round engines visit vintage v12's in tahachapi. Besides the usual Wrights and P & W's there are Bristol Centaurus sleeve valve radials, BMW 801's. In the inline side you can see the usual merlins, and griffins plus there is a Daimler Benz DB601 inverted V. Everyone is very nice, they gave me a tour of the works. Hopefully they will have one of these monsters on the test stand, very impressive.

What that radial needs to really finish it off is twin fifty-calibers (in scale) timed to shoot through the prop.

So did a bunch of USA aircraft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_wasp

Russians were fond of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klimov_M-105

red-beard 10-24-2012 02:57 AM

Is that empirical or theoretical?

targa911S 10-24-2012 05:23 AM
