Your Top 5 favorite Smart Phone Apps?

So I finally got assimilated into the Borg and crawled out from under a rock to buy my first smart phone, the newly released Droid Razr M.

Pretty amazing the speed and memory / display on the new generation of phones.

Soooooooo, as a total noob when it comes to Apps, I'm asking people to list their favorite or most used Apps, both tools and games.

The Verizon Apps store has something like 600,000 apps, but without wading through all the crap games like sharks eating swimmers, what are some of the cool must have Apps?

Thanks...............grins, this sent from my home PC, still getting used to the touch screen and Droid operating system on the phone.

Well, I like wind alert , night sky, google earth and NOAA weather. If I could cut loose from the shackles of life on the mainland, I would be very happy sailing in the great ponds of this earth. I just have to convince the wife, hahahahahahaha, good one, nice thought.

I have an iPhone, but the types of apps that I use the most:

Weather, particularly the NWS app that has alerts
Sports - ESPN has good ones with different sport themes
Craigspro - search multiple CL sites, I wish they had a PC version
Magazines
Unit converter

I too have moved to the darkside (Samsung galaxy SII).

I was going to post but feared the wrath of the fanboys.

Thank you for braving these dangerous waters for me!

My Fav:

Apple calls it: "Find near me".....pinpoints your location, you ask for closest restaurant, atm, gas station, etc......Give reviews and directions...

Other than that: traffic reports, weather, mountain pass report, news, google maps, etc.....

imcarthur 10-05-2012 07:22 PM

As above & Shazam, Flashlight, Sound Meter Lite.

Android version is called "Local".

I have tried many apps but currently have 4 downloaded apps on my phone.

Beautiful Widgets
K-9 Mail
Tapatalk
WellFTP Server

I don't do games or fluff. Most apps (both on iTunes and Google play) are worthless. YMMV.

wdfifteen 10-05-2012 11:44 PM

Weather channel - weather
Pandora - internet music
Waze - GPS navigation
ibook reader - book reader
solitiaire - game
blackjack - practice for Vegas
Did your phone come with a siri clone? I use siri all the time -- "Siri take a note," "siri text bill" "siri find Home Depot" etc. So one if the phone didn't come with it, one of the siri clones for Android would be good.
I have Yelp, but siri finds places that Yelp doesn't.
I have a few more apps on the phone, but I don't use them much
Sorry to be a "fanboy"

1 One of the most useful and very simple that I've had on my past 3 Android phones is "Buzzoff". I like to mute my phone when I go into meetings, go to the movies, go to a restaurant, but I don't always remember to unmute when I leave. Buzzoff allows you to set your phone to either silent or silent with vibrate and have it go back to normal mode after a given period of time or at a set time.

2 I use "Catch" for notes.

3 I prefer google navigation to the others

4 I've also switched to one of the alternate launch screens. I previously used ADW launcher, but now I'm using Apex launcher

5 I do use, from time to time, "barcode scanner".

some honorable mentions
These would be dependent on if you have TV and then if you have a cable/satellite provider that has an app.
The DirecTV app is pretty cool if you have DirecTV (I'm pretty sure there is an Xfinity app if you have Comcast).

My phone has a built in flashlight for the LED flash which is great, and I do use "Bubble" which is a bubble level app, but I wouldn't trust my life to it. I suppose it would be better if I calibrated it which is an option.

I almost hate to admit it, but I use my HP41CX app just about more than anything else. :(

1.) YouVersion Bible
2.) Waze
3.) SoundHound (Seems to do so much more than Shazam)
4.) Euchre 3D
5.) Sleep Machine BB (Plays background sounds while you sleep, the "BB" version also plays binaural beats)

Randy

edit: For weather info, I use "My Radar" And, contrary to what has been reported, the new Apple Maps app in iOS6 doesn't suck...IMHO

Media Remote - Sony Remote Control app turns iPhone into a remote for BluRay player. Solves the horrible interface problem.

My favorite go-to app: Happy Hour

Does that app have the NIV version of the Bible available?

Yes, NIV is one of the 294 versions, in 144 different languages you have access to.

One of my most favorite features is that it's actually a "speaking" Bible. I can't tell you how much is does for one's soul to go to sleep at night listening to your favorite books of the Bible being narrated to you.
