Alaska Airlines System Disruption
Just spent three hours at the airport. Alaska Airlines' computer system is down. Telco cable cut somewhere on the East Coast. After two hours of no computers, no checking in, no flights leaving, they announced "3 to 8 hours" before systems would be up again. Which sounds like "we don't know how long, but we have to say something". Obviously I'm not making my original flight to NYC today. Rebooked on another airline's redeye to JFK tonight. Now, at 10 am, the dilemma. Go in to the office for the rest of the day (my usual work day ends in about 5 hours). Or work at home?

Get on the internet and ask some strangers. That's my vote.

Work at home and get some sleep

Fortunately, I can still talk to yoose guys! :D angela |
You at PDX? They have a Rouge brewery inside the airport... just sayin...

No - down in Medford. The access to my company "outage" lasted until about 12:30. Phone started ringing again around the same time but I've only gotten a few calls.
And now, it's time to go ride my bike! angela |
Apparently Sprint's fiber cable was cut in two places w/in a hour, which defeated the automatic rerouting. News reports say Alaska computers came back up around 1 pm. With a few thousand passengers to check in and planes that were out of position, some needing fresh crews, I'm not sure I would have made it out today on Alaska.

Reminds me of an old sysadmin joke:
"what do you do if you're out hiking miles from anywhere and you get lost?" "take the fiber cable out of your backpack and drop it on the ground; hitch a ride back with the back-hoe operator". :) |

and I clearly remember the days of carbon copy paper.
deal with it. waaahhhhhhhhhhhh, your life has obviously been distrupted to the point of telling total stranger how you feel? did you update your Facebook page too? |
Okay then, you stay away and don't post unless a member of your family dies - I think that should be a topic weighty enough to satisfy you.

Oh and Prius drivers are great when I'm on the bike. They never throw hard/sharp things like beer cans or bottles at me, it's always organic vegetables or compost material. Much softer, though occasionally quite fragrant. :D angela |

Or went to the parking structure and got some shots of someone taking up more that one parking spot... yeah... that would have been post worthy! |
