Can anyone identify these stones?

I believe they are from southern central Brazil. I have no idea what they are. About 1/4" or slightly larger in size. Any ideas?

I say Topez, but it could be Aquamarine. Aquamarine usually run lighter in color. Lighter blue. Topez is usually darker in color compare to Aquamarine. Not sapphire looking from your photo.

Good call... I think they're blue paraiba tourmalines. Cool. Thanks for input, everyone.

Let us know when you find out what they are, still say topaz.

My wife says topaz, too.

A doctor friend of mine in Belo Horizonte, Brasil gave them to me as a gift 20 years ago. I thought they were long gone, but came across them today. Maybe I'll have someone take a look at them when I get into the city later this week. Kinda cool finding long lost stuff. I had a civil war era coin like 30 years ago that I found in a flea market. It was appraised for around $5K then. I've since lost it :(

Looks like the wife is going to get a nice set of earrings out of this deal :)

If they are blue paraiba tourmaline, and are of any significant size (more than a carat - yeppers) then they are pretty valuable...

Blue paraiba tourmaline will almost glow even in low light condition. Something to do with the copper in it. A topaz will not, it will just refract.

Curious what they are - hope you get them appraised and report back! Not trying to be nosy about the value, just about what they are or are not.

They seem to be in the 2.5-3 carat range. About 10mm x 7mm x 6mm deep. I know nothing about these things, so who knows. I'm just happy to find them, and remember the circumstances they were given as a gift. I had spent quite a bit of time (about 6 trips to Brasil) helping my friend raise money for his bovine/ceramic aortic and mitral valve replacements, which he sold to hospitals so he could fund free heart surgeries for poor children in Brasil.

Ya know what is pathetic about all of this? I should know the answer due to my background.

I was never very good with the "blue" rocks for some reason. Now show me an organic rich shale, and I turn into a pig hunting for truffles.

Feel free to send them to me. :D

I have a friend who's a gemologist at Tiffany & Co. Next time you're in LA, we could have him take a look at them, if you're still interested.

Two different issues. I was a Geology major when I started college until I discovered lab work. :( I grew up in the Jewelry business. Dad had work on all kinds of stuff over the years. To ID A precious stone compare to junk in the dirt is a whole different ball of wax. After 40+ years looking and messing with this stuff, my father can look at something with his eye piece and can pretty much tell you if a stone is real and its wholesale market price. Now that he's retired, the current market pricing is off. I worked for him until my mid 20s.
