Hellp choosing an OBD2 Tool
Just posted in the Boxster/Cayman forum about my car throwing a P3001 code (again) when starting up in cold weather.
I have been planning to buy Softronic because it works great with Porsche and other euro-makes. I happen to have other makes in the stable - Jeep, Chevy, Pontiac - and Softronic only lets you bind up to 3 VINs on the 'enthusiast' version. I'm looking for something I can use on more than just 3 cars. So, I've been looking: OBDCOM - Seems to be pretty comprehensive and usable on all makes/models. Support available for the software and works on all OBD2 cars. Innova 3130 - Looks to be a comprehensive hand-held tool. I can pick one up locally or order from Amazon. Are there others I should look at in the $250 & below range? Thanks! |
I have a Launch Creader for obd and readiness tests and an Autel Maxicheck Pro for work. The Launch costs $80 and the Autel $600.

Do you have an android device or an iPhone or iPad? You could buy a $15 OBDII Bluetooth adapter and one of the many apps that are out there.
I also really like my scangauge 2, but that does other things besides just read codes, and is probably not ideal for use as a diagnostic tool only because of the limited screen. |
I think I paid around $75 for my Innova and it's been great for many years.

I purschased an ELM327 compatible Bluetooth reader. I am looking forward to using this. Sure I won't be able to go so far as to flash the DME or do upgrades but just being able to get diagnostic codes will be of monumental help.

I use Torque most of the time. Great app for Android that will allow you to read codes, reset them and run web searches for help. Also has some other fun "things" you can play with too.

Scangauge 2 is really good... you can customize it to read OEM PIDs is you can find the hex address...
Each manufacturer has some proprietary info that can be read only if you know the address.. I also have the Torque/bluetooth set up.... I havent figured it all out yet but seems capable.... And have the duramteric... etc |
