If your company does any kind of business with the government, they are subject to compliance with the OFCCP. The have the power to audit and fine. You are required to keep applicant tracking records including the gender and ethnic make up.

I say the government is responsible for the dumbing of America. These programs designed to take care of the disadvantaged, enable the acceptability of laziness and stupidity. With nothing else to do, they breed because it feels good living only in the moment with no regard for the consequences. This creates the next generation that is now one iteration more stupid and now even more dependent on the government and other people's money.

Anytime we try to means test, put time limitations on benefits (Afterall, they are supposed to be temporary relief until you get back on your feet), or drug test, those who benefit most from the dumbing down complain and cry discrimination and disenfranchisation.

It is a very sad state of affairs indeed.

1) Should we be asking the question? and 2) Is asking the question inappropriate?

1) Yes, we should be asking the question. The current population growth rate is unworkable. Maybe not this year, but 20-50 years. Our grandchildren will have it rough.

2) Yes, its inappropriate. Thats is why we are doomed to fail in this regard. Religion, current morals, flawed governments, all contribute to "us" not ever being able to implement an effective population control plan.

For some reason, we are just wired to keep doing what ever it is we are doing until forced to change. Even in the face of overwhelming data.

Well, seems to me that if one were genuine about the sanctity of the natural course of things one would have more respect for her rather than impose moralism, and government control over her.

I do agree that we are doomed to fail in that regard.

I don't see any body asking this question, either.

Is it an inappropriate question to ask?

Come on. Seems this was the genesis for the original post to begin with and it has nothing to do with whether or not we're getting smarter or dumber.

And all of this equating of intelligence with monetary success by so many on this thread is just flat ridiculous. The most brilliant surgeon will most likely never earn in a lifetime what an elite major league baseball player who can't put two sentences together makes in a single year. People who are successful in business have the knack for knowing what people want - they don't need to have extreme intelligence or education. That said, people with high education tend to have the discipline and perseverance, mental capability, reasoning, and ability to solve problems and work through complex ideas - skills they hone in their schooling. Some people walking the streets with no education just naturally possess this intelligence and abililty - without even trying. So, are we getting dumber? Look around you - we have the ability to do things we couldn't even conceive of just twenty years ago.

Us "intelligent" people need to help out mother nature by limiting the number of "undesirable" humans allowed on the planet?

Should "someone" be asking the question though? Why propagate if you cannot support your offspring?

Or is that question inappropriate because it's no one's business?

I doubt these people having offspring which they lack the means to support or the discipline to rinse them.
Are thinking about the out come when they decide to have sex.

Can you remind me again what this has to do with intelligence? Seems that falls under the "irresponsible" category. Plenty of irresponsible geniuses out there. Are we saying that there aren't smart people in the world that produce offspring that they can't afford?

I don't think the population is dumbing down in a generalized IQ sense. I certainly think it is in an economics IQ sense. Plus the country is getting lazier. More and more people are figuring out how to get somebody else to do the work for them. And the politicians are very eager to enable that process.

Yes this is it IMO, not stupidity, but laziness accentuated by political correctness. Promolgated by the new ignorance entrepreneur, pick any politician.

Is it an inappropriate question to ask?

Not at all.
The more kids they have, the more raises they get.
"Popped out another illegitimate kid? Here ya go, another $250 a month.
see ya again in 9 months ........."
Our gubmint PAYS them to reproduce even through they can't raise their own kids.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

It may seem that way, what with all the Wall Street criminals, and the big money center baks stealing from people and crashing the economy, and the GOP trying to prevent a recovery, but look at history. Thomas Edison got other people to do his work for him, and then there were all the Robber Barons. Go back further and you have slavery and feudalism.

So this sort of thing is nothing new.

My German uncle (94) is a veteran of WW2... He recently told me that most of the fighting during the war was done by 5% of the soldiers. That same 5% generally made it home after the war. The other 95% who cowered in fear and didn't return fire lay on the battlefield mortally wounded or dead from what he descibed as stupid reasons. Things like running out of ammo because they had no discipline. Or their rifle jamming because they didn't clean it that morning. Or they died of disease because they didn't look after their personal hygiene.

So Uncle made it home and got married to a beautiful German girl then immigrated to Australia. Had four kids and then 12 grand kids... A great family for sure.

He is truly one of the most successful people I've ever met and I proud that he's my uncle.

With all due respect to your uncle - that is complete hogwash, especially considering the fatality rates in WW2 on both sides at the eastern front. It is also extremely offensive to read for anyone who has lost a family member in war, regardless on what side.

Well said. Here's a question for sc_rufctr: Do you think any preparation or intelligence saved a soldier in WW2 when they were storming the beaches of Normandy on their Amtraks and were running onto the beaches facing 50-caliber machine gun fire? Thousands died on those beaches - they were sprayed down before they could even fire a shot; many were killed before even leaving the vehicles. Didn't have anything to do with their finger nails being dirty, or their weapons jamming - most never even fired a single shot. There's a distinct difference between fear, bravery, and intelligence. When the bullets were flying on those beaches you survived out of sheer luck or because your buddy in front of you took the bullet in your path.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Any distinction between stupid people and stupid acts?

Most of us would probably not admit to being stupid but, if honest, would almost certainly admit to having committed stupid acts at one time or another.

Why do people commit stupid acts?
-The person lacks the ability to not do a stupid act.
-The person is ignorant having no knowledge the act is stupid.
-The person has ability and knowledge but just doesn't care.

The fact that I do stupid acts does not eo ipso mean that I am stupid.

My brain hurts, I need beer.
