Facebook

When I first joined Facebook 2.5 years ago I thought it was fantastic reconnecting with childhood and college friends and family, now my wife and I both find it useless and a waste of time. Do I really have to know everything you buy for your home, every family member and what you ate for dinner last night? My wife and I deactivated our accounts 6 months ago and don't miss the drama. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I had salmon for dinner last night.

My work boots smell funny.
I just group people so that I don't get the crap jumping up on my main page. I keep up with the people I care to and can still kind of stay in touch with others

What's a Facebook?

People who are in touch with me are because I wish it so. Ditto those who aren't.

My FB friends seem to spend all their time recommending Kohls and Samsung to me.

Faceplant has changed... It's evolving into something but what?

Hard-Deck 10-19-2012 03:54 AM

I do not use it; do not miss it; do not care. I'm a Gen-X raised by Greatest Gen parents.

The only thing that bothers me, is the constant sports analysis by a few people, I can hide them whenever games are on though if they go to prattling the play by play.

I think your real problem, is that you don't have cool enough friends.

The moral superiority about Facebook being posted on another social network are always my favorite threads.

Here's an inspiring life-affirmation quote.

Facebook is in an interesting and dangerous position.

Zuckerberg was an absolute genius. First in creating Facebook, but then, even moreso, in monetizing it in a mindboggling way. Including the public offering and its timing.

My son had a bunch of his friends over this week, they are all high school age. Here's some of the things I heard them say to each other:

"Facebook is lame."

"I haven't checked my Facebook page in 5 months."

Etc.

My kids don't have facebook pages (or any other voluntary Internet presence where there real names are used), but most of the others did. And to literally every single one of them Facebook was "cool" a year ago, but is completely dead now.

That's similar to what I hear from a lot of adults, too.

IMO, it's pretty clear that at some point, the rate of growth of facebook's user base will slow (if it hasn't already) and then reverse. Once it starts reversing, that's a very slippery slope (i.e., MySpace).

But, people are always going to communicate, and Facebook as a company has a chance if it can keep riding that wave. For example, the kids mostly seem to mass communicate via Instagram these days. That's a company that Facebook bought out (for a ton of money) and now owns.

But, that seems like a risky business. It is basically constant gambling. At some point, IMO, luck runs out. And even when you have a big hit, like Instagram, it can be very fleeting. And, I'm still not clear how it's monetized long term.

Facebook is alright. its nice to keep in touch with friends who live far away.

Gogar 10-19-2012 06:56 AM

Facebook will go away in the next few years, and there's going to be a little cultural reversion to the idea that 'privacy' is cool. Unfortunately, you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Funny! Although I will say that Pelican, particularly the OT forum, is much more informative and entertaining.

I use Facebook for Porsche related information and pictures of Porsches. Other than that if someone starts posting every time they fart they get filtered off my home page.

It's a brilliant platform. You can control what and from whom you hear about, so the complaint about boring or stupid updates is a non-issue unless all you have are boring friends to choose from. That seems to be the issue with most, (but not all), FB haters.

It's the best thing in the history of the world for sharing vacation and family pictures, particularly baby pics from close friends and family. You can actually look at them for a second or not at all and no one is the wiser. Try that with aunt Emma handing you a stack of Kodak prints one at a time back in the stone age. And you can look at hi-res photos or videos of stuff that you really do want to see, for as long or short as you want and when it's convenient.

Nothing is perfect, especially the world's largest web app. There are people on my friends list who I wish would post more and others that I wish would post less. But once I bothered to open up the preferences and figure out how it works, I'm rarely if ever annoyed by anyone. I suppose that if you live somewhere boring and only know 40 other boring people, then yeah, FB would suck.

I still think that privacy is cool. I rarely feel like my privacy is violated on FB, wish that I could say the same about this place.

I didn't like them then and I don't like them now, so I have no desire to connect with them. But you have to have a personal facebook account to have a business page, so I have one. I am amazed at the goobers who write to me and the crap that shows up on it. I don't really know how it works, so there is probably some anti-goober setting but who has the time to learn something as useless as how to use facebook?

Completely different platform/concept/execution between a huge BBS such as this, where you are interacting with thousands of people you'll never meet, and FB, where I'm interacting with mostly only people that actually know and who know me.

I try my best not to let one cross-pollinate the other, as well. Completely different worlds. I have a few PPOT members on my FB, sometimes it gives me pause...I feel a lot better about chatting with strangers here than there. Each platform has its ups and downs this board is great but it's not more informative and entertaining than FB for me, not even close.
