Orionid meteor shower/satellites?
Anyone get up last night to see the meteor shower? I woke up at 5 am and went out on the deck and saw a few over an hour with my son. A couple of good ones. It was worth seeing.
I did watch something "fall" from Orion's belt...it took about 30 seconds from the belt till I lost it behind the house. It flared up a little and then I could still see it. Later I saw a light move left from Orion's leg across the sky where I had a opn view. I watched it lope along the sky for about a minute. At the same time, I saw one rise up from the bottom of the constellation but I lost track of it. I'm wondering what these things were. I have never seen slow shooting stars. I dont the they were planes. They didn't flash and sort of came out of nowhere. Could they have been satellites? Can you see satellites without anything to illuminate them?

Yep, it's not that unusual to see satellites. They generally look like a plane at very high altitude, just a spec of light, but the move way too fast to be a plane.

I was playing with the camera a bit with some long exposures, hoping to catch a meteor. No dice, but I did catch a satellite. One I didn't see last night. I have two back to back photos with a line tracking through it. Hell, that's pretty cool in my book...seeing something a zillion miles away in space like that. I need to get a remote for this camera...I'll post it later.

Most satellites are really not too far up. Around 200 miles on average, I believe.

Here's a couple of back to back photos where you can see the satellite around the 7:00 position. I didn't see this one at all when I was taking the photo, it's not terribly bright here either. ![]() ![]()
