When selecting motor oil~
Which wt do you use?
Which brand? Why? Does a different wt help a high mileage motor? So many choices and suggestions. I use 5-20 cheap-o synth in my Ford race car, 20-50 Castrol in the Porsche and it's time for an oil change in the high mileage Volvo ( 170k ). I forget what I used last. Whatever the parts desk guy suggested at the Volvo dealership. My Ford F-350 diesel get's oil service every 3k at the dealership and I am embarrassed to admit, I have no idea what oil they are using. Delo 400? Who knows? I'd like to hear some ideas and experiences on this. Also some insight on the differences between wts would be helpful. thanks! KT

oil weight depends on the motor. every motor's going to have different requirements. 5w20 seems to be general consensus for fuel savers now. 5w30 for most passenger cars.
brand...that's up to you. brad penn, amsoil, swepco...you pay for it. |

5-30 Mobil One from Walmart. Good quality and cheaper than at an auto parts store.

20/50 Penzoil or Quakerstate only for 40years now in everything from my 426 Hemi to the 2.7,3.0,3.2, 3.3, 3.6 , Race car, .Never a problem

I do the Mobile 1 from Walmart thing for my wife's car along with RPM Delo400 and filter for the truck. I follow the 5K mile oil change schedule for the truck. Soon after I got it, I bought a bypass filter and installed it. I read that is one of the major things you can do for longivity, but what do I know. 55+ years ago when my father worked in the service station business, he always said RPM Delo was one of the best oils.

In modern turbo diesels, you'd better use full synthetics. They're exhibiting lots of problems if you don't

Eric, I challenge that. I can provide several proof statements to the contrary. I have done several case studies that pitted a full synthetic to a very well developed mineral based oil and the mineral based out lasted it. Depends on how the mineral oil based lube was made but sadly many are poorly developed...
