Sandy vs nj or ny
PRACTICAL advice to boat owners
run forest run but rig you boats that can't be hauled out with the biggest lines you can replace cleats with bigger ones with strong backing plates fair leads and chocks too most boats use far too small fair weather gear sized stuff to survive a hurricane you need full 1'' to 2'' nylon lines and lots of them you can't use too big a line or too many of them but many will get caught useing too small or too few lines both my boats survived ANDREW AT ANCHOR IN OPEN BAY WATERS most others went inside islands to tie off BUT the storm winds came off the land and blew those boats up on the islands they hid behind my boats had 8 anchor lines spider webbed and lost 4 to chaffing but the remaining 4 held them in place in the open water but outside the islands in the lee of the islands protected from the worst wind and surge remember that calm protected creek will turn into a flooded rapid both on the incoming surge and the out going one too and will bring all the junk out with it too as the water from the tide surge other boats and all kinds of junk will be in that outgoing retreating surge water flow open water is far safer less surge and less junk but pick a spot away from other boats and far away from rivers or other sources of tidal forced debris study the track and hope you guess right on where the wind will come from and shift over the storm passage good luck guys |

Great advice!
Everytime we have a big storm I always ran down to the marina to doulbe check all my lines. (Plus everyone elses.....) We had 2 boats get trashed one storm, because the guy in between them had 3/8 docklines on a 34ft cruiser. It always amazes me how many people never properly secure their boats when a big storm is anticipated.
