Good question Don, I was in the apple store a little while back looking at those apps with connectors. No idea which ones are god or not, but it would be nice to play through the ipad and use headphones

I have tried GarageBand and Amplitude (free version) with the iRig. Main prob I have -- I think -- is that I'll have to use a headphone amp to get enough volume out of this setup and my AKG's. It may be fine with more sensitive earbuds/headphones but I haven't tried yet. More commonly I use the headphone-out on a little Fender Mustang but it sounds pretty awful.

Interested in hearing what has worked well for others. Unfortunately I usually have to practice at very low volume or with headphones to keep the family peace.

I've been doing some reading and there are two ways to connect your guitar to your iOS device - through the headphone connector or the dock connector. There's apparently quite a large quality difference using the dock connector, and naturally those devices are a bit more spendy. You can go from free to $40 using the headphone jack (iRig) to the clearly superior Apogee ($99) and GuitarJack 2 ($149).

I'm curious as I might play with headphones - and this seems easier/faster than pulling the amp out of the closet, futzing with pedals, etc. Oh, and I sold my old pedals as they were basically collectors items.
