5, just don't follow the maps!

iPhone 5 versus my old 4 is an incredible jump forward in speed ... The internal phone functions are faster too ... The only problem I am having is syncing to my older MacBook Pro... I can't get it to sync via USB

How old is your Macbook Pro? I have a late 2007 and it still works fine but I'm moving toward a new one soon due to the fact I only have 28 GB of space left on the drive. I was going to put a SSD in my MBP but I'm certain within a year I'd be in the same situation as you are now.

Have to disagree simply on the basis of cost. Yes the 5 is faster (LTE on the 5, 4G on the 4S - and yes you most certainly can get 4G on the iPhone 4S...) but the downside if that is the iPhone 5 is going to chew through data quickly and the LTE plans on the major carriers that facilitate those faster speeds are criminally expensive AND data-limited. People who never used to hit data limits with iPhone 4 devices are starting to hit them now with the iPhone 5 and it gets mighty expensive if one does...

I have to respectfully disagree with you here regarding LTE and your statement that that it will chew through data: LTE actually transfers data more efficiently so more data is received in a given time-frame allowing the user to consume the same amount of data faster.

I believe what you are suggesting is that because LTE is so much faster, the consumer will potentially use more data during an identical time period instead of benefiting from the efficiency, which is probably a good predictor of behavior. However with some discipline, and in my case an admonishment from parent to college-age teens, LTE is the way to go along with a monthly allotment of 6GB of shared data and unlimited talk and text which (on ATT) equates to ~$56/month per phone.

IMO, the iPhone 5 is worth the $.

Only apprehension I have is the accessory issue. Have a houseful of mini-USB cords/chargers, etc. Use a Boost case on my Iphone as battery life only gets me through half my day (charges the phone via mini-usb). None available yet (that I'm aware of) for the IP5. I'm sure the first will be mega-bucks.

How is battery life on the IP5 vs 4? If it's significantly better, my be worth a try. I leave wifi off unless I need it to conserve battery life, but not willing to further compromise functionality over a design weakness (battery). Otherwise, I'm a 4 guy for the forseeable future.

Is verizon 4G now? Can i get google maps on the 5 in anyway?

onewhippedpuppy 11-03-2012 07:39 AM

I just upgraded to the 5 from a 4, with identical usage I would rate battery life as identical.

Until Google comes out with an app, you can get Google maps via Safari.

I love the screen real-estate and speed of the 5, but it's definitely a bit more cumbersome to hold/use and also the bezel is very easily damaged. My 4S looked new-in-box after a year whereas the 5 had visible dings and nicks after 3 days. Both are slippery as hell and I can't use 'em without a bumper.

Porsche-O-Phile 11-03-2012 10:45 AM

The problem is LTE discourages efficient data use and apps. It's just like the Internet as a whole - capacity invites bloat and inefficiency and a lot of people are starting to see the effects of that. There is little incentive for people to meter their usage.

I do like LTE speed but I ain't paying $120+ a month for it when I can get pretty quick 4G for less than half that with no contract and no limit and no tethering charges.

I don't use any more data on LTE than I did before. I have the usage logs to prove it. I wait a hell of a lot less to get it though. The 5 on Verizon is almost an order of magnitude faster than the Nexus Galaxy was on T-Mobile.

I think I have a bad 5. I use way more battery and drop a ton of calls relative to my 4. Going to apple store this week to get a new phone.

Hugh R 11-03-2012 12:39 PM

My 4S says it has 4G.

I went from a 4 to a 5. It's my first relationship with Siri. She's great for sports scores, but don't let that crazy ***** dial the phone for you.

Hspa+ not true 4G LTE...

I got a chuckle reading through the posts on this subject, given most folks on this site are pre-water cooling :)

"Yep, 5. You'll never, ever regret getting the newer/better one but you'll regret the opposite"

I stopped using 'push' for my email and now use 'manual fetch'. My 5 battery lasts considerably longer. Battery life is totally dependent on use and cell coverage. If coverage is spotty, your battery will die very quickly.

It is an early 2006... It is stuck at snow leopard as far as OS.

Apple just released mini-USB adapter. $19 from Apple.
