The London Times, November 9, 1796

This is the edition providing President George Washington's Resignation Speech.

I am working with a librarian friend and an archivist to place a value on this document.

I am working on the value with an eye towards sale of the document.

Might anyone have seen something like this pass for sale in the past five years?

Condition: Graded as very good. Some slight yellowing on edges, one portion with a slight hole, folded in half and then in half one more time, stored this way from 1796 forward.

Yes, this is an original document. I received it from my Uncle as a portion of my inheritance. His direction was for me to dispose of, at my leisure, all the silver and all the documents for highest portion possible. He burned the majority of the artwork, some done by some rather famous artists, most by regional names none would now recognize. It was a shame, most of the family history and documents went up in that fire. I guess so goes the old families when there are no remaining direct heirs. I should have loved to have had the houses and the acreage. Sold and placed into estate settlement, to include a large portion of taxes and charitable contributions.

I 'd speak to Sothebys about it. Even if they are not intereted, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

That is quite something to have.
Do you need to sell it?

The archivist is contacting some people at auction houses. I have another object I need to discuss with Sothebys. What is the best route to contact them? I hate cold calling and do not know if I will get to the right party. It is an old silver spoon (really, a spoon, huge with a windmill on it).

Yes, unfortunately I have no heirs, Sister has no heirs. I am hoping I can send specific family pieces to my remaining cousins in England or France who have children. But some things that are not directly family related might better serve me being sold so I can use the money elsewhere.

They'll have it appraised by an expert and then you can sell it to them for half price.
Let us know when it will air.

So it ends?

Just thougth I'd throw this back up for fun!

Got in touch with a gentleman about the spoon. Now, the spoon was presented to me as a very old relic of unknown origin. It originated from the titled side of the family. I have no reason to believe anyone was pulling my chain anywhere along this path.

So, this piece predates the gentleman, my namesake, who presented me with it. It is about 1900 Dutch souvenir and not a copy of an early piece. Decorative value only.

So far, crickets on the newspaper unless I am willing to donate. If I am donating I have several dozen who would LOVE to add this to their collection as their only copy.

So ends this foray. Now to move on and view 18th and 19th century British and American furniture and 1950s French copies. Oh, and some copies I have that were made by a relative in the '30s that have fooled "experts" as to their authenticity. I know better and could not allow such a ruse to go forth, but it might be fun for an Antiques Roadshow???
