Catalytic Converter question
Years ago I took off the Cat on my SC and replaced it with a Fabspeed cat. I kept the OEM one of course but just wanting to put it back on for the buyer of my SC who also lives in Kalif.
So I just took a flash light and looked down inside it and there seems to be nothing inside ?..but it does not look like it was trashed inside at all. What are these old cats supposed to look like inside ? I thought it was supposed to be some kind of honeycomb stuff in there? It's all one piece welded construction and no evidence anywhere that it was tampered with. |
I'll bet a PO busted out the internals with a hammer and large screwdriver to clear a clog or to make it "free-flowing".

There is supposed to be a matrix inside. If the car was allowed to run rich for an extended time the cat can overheat to the point of the matrix melting down and the crumbled pieces will blow out ,leaving a gutted cat. also some people will purposly knock out the guts without any outward signs to reduce back pressure.

Hmmmm.... about what I figured. No garage would reinstall it if it's gutted and I'm not up to the task at this point... A new Ca approved cat might be the only choice. Not cheap !
Edit: Just checked...only about $200 for a Magna-flow Ca approved. OK then ;) |
