Shotgun choices ... Benelli Ultra Light
I have posted before about me jonesing for a new upland gun. I think I really like the benelli ultra light. I would like to use this for upland game (mainly for quail, chuckar, dove and snipe. Occasionally I may hunt pheasant, rabbit or tree squirrels).
I don't think a 28 ga will cut it, so the choices are 20 and 12 ga with the 12 ga coming in 2 lenghts. ULTRA LIGHT 12-GAUGE 2-3/4" AND 3" 10801 24" WeatherCoat™ 45.5" 6.0 lbs. 10802 26" WeatherCoat™ 47.5" 6.1 lbs. ULTRA LIGHT 20-GAUGE 2-3/4" AND 3" 10803 24" WeatherCoat™ 45.5" 5.2 lbs. Which one would you huntsmen and women(?) personally chose and why? Cheers, G Last edited by aigel; 11-16-2012 at 09:29 PM.. |

Bill, those quail, dove, snipe and chuckar are all very small.
![]() ![]() A lot of people argue that a 20 ga game load performs about the same as a 12 ga target load. I do indeed shoot fine with 12 ga target loads, even 20 ga target loads. I am intrigued by the weight savings going to the 20 ga. I lug this for miles and miles on a good day. G |

i have seen 1st hand the difference btwn my M-1 benelli with 21" full choked on quail and dove vs my buddies SBE 30" WITH FULL CHOKE!
21" vs 30" doesnt seem like a lot, well let me tell you i saw it with my own eyes. incredible reach out and "touch" them effect. i will say he was making non stop hits at the 50yd mark. both of us using #6 3" rounds. i want a benelli SBE 30" full choked so bad i can taste it. 18-21" barrel is for home dee-fense, nothing more unless the dove quail or rabbit wants to commit suicide and come within 30yds.

I need the 3rd shot. It makes a big difference on that first flush on a covey.
Also, why carry an extra barrel if you can have a gun reload the single barrel for you? ![]() To get a very light and nice dbl barrel gun costs a lot more $$$ than a decent auto loader like this. JMHO of course. G |

Beretta makes a nice auto loader gun...I use the 12 bore for ducks and 20 bore for quail, dove, chucker and pheasants. At my pheasant club however I use Remington's sport .410

Just right, although I use .410 for Dove, o/u.
Two shots is fair, in my mind, and I have shot a lot of quail and dove. I'm not feeding my family on a Q and D hunt, so two is all I need. Let them fly after that. So, 20 gauge tops

My hunting is in the high desert, often grueling landscape. It may take hours to come up on a covey. After the first flush they may be out of reach in tall brush or a hillside you can't hike into. I need every shot.

I've used the Benelli 12 and 20ga and they are both excellent shotguns. I prefer the 20ga , personally...

I'd do the 20 gauge Benelli and I spent some time on the website, looking at the specs. I would own that gun. Very nice.

Upland wise I'm a O/U guy. If I only could have one shotgun, I would go with a soft shooting autoloader. I have an old Beretta A303 12GA that I have been in love with for 20+ Years

I grew up with a .410 and it was a PITA. As soon as I moved up to a 12 gauge and very light loads things started to happen. Our shotgun shooting is 90% ducks, 10% rabbits, and 10% pheasants ![]() |
