Do the holidays suck for you?
The family has grown so much that we just can't seem to get together anymore. At least not like we used to. The son and daughter have their in-laws as well as me and their Mom. But there just aren't enough hours in the day. Things sure have changed.

Not my favorite time, like being with family but hate the commercialism.

Did someone ask me what I would like ( want ) for Christmas?????

They are great - small family unit - a few days off work - I wish not everyone was off at the same time, so going places would be a little nicer.

Yeah, after the rug rats leave home holiday gatherings are merely times to load up on gossip to talk about until the next holiday gathering. I could very easily become a grumpy old hermit.

I like where this thread is going...:p
I was talking on the phone with my Mom a little earlier and she wanted to know if I minded that she attend the annual Thanksgiving event put on by my late step-father's side. They have a huge extended family and there will probably be 50-70 attending. Including a lot of kids. Every year I say the same thing. leave me alone...I want to relax, watch sports, fiddle with my home projects, and relax some more. I've never been a big fan of Thanksgiving. No wonder there's so many over-weight Americans! Another corporate conspiracy! PS: I told Mom "Mom...I want you to do whatever you'd like to do....you have my blessing." :) Edit: Signed, (per Ian) "The Grumpy Hermit" |
OK cool. It's not just me.

Hate teh commercialization
|
The only family I have left are two daughters and they are both so busy trying to have a cup of coffee with them is impossible much less getting together for the holidays. I've gotten used to spending them alone and try to enjoy them for what they are, a seasonal celebration.

Hate it.
Holidays have become too stressful. You get stretched in every direction. Who you are obligated to go vist, where you have to go, etc, etc... Plus the whole commercialism of it totally sucks, and has ruined it. |
I dread the holidays every year. The commercilization is off the charts. If you decide not to participate, you're considered a scrooge or cheap. I want/need NOTHING but my wife stresses about finding gifts for me.
Biggest thing is that when I was young, my entire family got together. When my mom died, my rather large family seemed to drift off in different directions. Massive family get togethers were the best times and just thinking about their absense makes me sad. Can't wait for 1.1.13. |
I really dislike it, but my wife is festive especially with the kids. She's stress doing all that crap for the kid's school(not necessary IMO, but what the hell do I know?) then she stresses me out because when can't get it all done. What a waste of time. Your wives do that?
|
Yep, my wife gets psychotic around the holidays she loves it so much. Gets all pissed off at me because IDGAF anymore. Way too much stress for one day.
|
I'd love to spend the time with my kids but it seems they just have "better?" things to do with their holiday time. Certainly the commercialism blows. But I can't even get together with family just to celebrate as family. In-laws, friends, time to themselves...WTF happened?
|
We're having Thanksgiving for my wife's family here. I really don't have any family to get together with anymore. It's a big foodfest with all her relatives. I also hate the commercalizaton and it's everything, not just holidays. If there is even a small possibility to commercalize anything anymore, it gets the treatment and becomes ruined & tainted.

I miss my grandfather the most during the holidays....

Don't like Christmas.
Way too commercial as others have agreed upon. Because of Divorce, Kids are used as pawns at this time. Another year of denouncing Christmas for what it is fundamentally about and masking the definition as not to offend others and calling it the" HOLIDAYS" on almost everything including cards. |
We stick to basics; family unit of me, wife, kids, that's it. We are thankful at Thanksgiving and for Christmas we give each other three gifts just like Jesus received. No extended family, no commercialism, no credit card bills. Simple, relaxing, excellent quiet family unit time.
