Need a low total-cost-of-ownership Printer recommendation

I'm looking for the small block chevy of home printers. Durable, simple, reasonable. We have four children that print out homework, book reports, Christmas lists, birthday lists, and even photos of stuff they just like. Print Preview is rarely used, and often they print things two or three times before they get it right. I've gone to Staples three or four times now and spent over $65 each time for various color and black and white cartridges... and we're low again, which prompted this post. I'm not around to watch every printing event, of course, and I don't want to be in that role either.

While there is a role for the higher-end color multi-function Canon we have, I really would like to map the kids' to a basic laser or ink jet black and white printer that offers a much lower operating costs. When they really do need color, the parents can facilitate that.

Any recommendations?

Brother mono laser. Solid, reliable, toner not expensive.

Ditto on the Brother.

I'm another Brother.

Brother make other lasers and toners for Canon, HP etc to put their name on.

And their products are cheaper.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT use recycled/refilled toners. They will knacker your nice new printer.

And all the money you save can be spent on Porsche stuff instead :)
