more bass porn

Picked this up today on a whim.

First bass I've ever owned. Couldnt pass it up as there was a $150 ding discount on the bottom.

Any suggestions from the bass gurus on the board for upgrades? I've already dialed in the action and intonation.

where was it made? If it's MIM, change out the PU's with 60's reissues, Fender Custom Shop 60s Jazz Bass Pickup Set OVER-WOUND! | eBay the bridge to 60's style threaded saddles,USA Vintage 60s RI ROAD WORN Fender Jazz Bass BRIDGE 62 Relic $6 OFF! | eBay change out the control panel to two stacked pots instead of 1-1-1. Fender USA Stack Knob Jazz Bass Control Plate New-Factory Second Slightly Flawed | eBay You should shield everything including the back of the PG and ground everything together while yer at it. I did those things to my MIM fretless and it's a much better sounding bass.

That's pretty cool, but I think at $75/hr you won't get your money's worth unless you already have a solid foundation.

That $75 might be better spent on 3 weeks' worth of lessons with a local bass teacher.

Ant has a systematic approach that is incredibly good for beginners. In fact, I started with the same exercises that beginners get. The quality of teachers is all over the map, and one that is getting $25/hr is either just starting out (and might be good) or they aren't very good. Studying with a bad teacher is worse than a waste of time - it can actually set you back on the instrument.

First exercise (at least for me) was "24 permutations". You use one finger per fret, and start on the low E (or whatever your lowest string is) at whatever fret you want. You then play (finger #)

1-2-3-4

on each string ascending, then each string descending. Then you play

1-2-4-3

on each string ascending, then each string descending. Then you play

1-3-2-4, 1-3-4-2, 1-4-2-3, 1-4-3-2, 2-1-3-4, 2-1-4-3, etc. until you've done all 24 possible permutations. Oh, and you do this to a metronome with a target of 400bpm (16th notes @ 100bpm).

This is a dexterity exercise, but it sets you up for the scales and modes and other things, which he also has unique (and very rational) approaches to.

Yep, I do these on the guitar when I am able to force myself to. As well as some multi-string variants.

I hate them. Someday I will sit down and invent a solid, useful exercise/drill regimen that actually sounds musical. Drills that sound like drills are like a ... drill ... in my ear.

He's got those too. That is just the first basic dexterity exercise. Do you do them with a metronome? If not, you're wasting some/much of your time.

The key is to do them every day. I have a 30 minute routine that I do - some dexterity, some rhythmic, some scale/mode. Then I should be doing my "sight read a page a day" along with some ear training but I'm not as disciplined as I'd like.

I've already got a Fender Bassman, so the tube amp part is covered.

I was thinking more along the lines of pickups, bridge, etc..

I play guitar at least an hour a day, scales, modes, etc.. and then usually a half hour of just jamming. Bass is something Ive always wanted to do.
