2012 Mazdapeed3- CEL and white smoke?

Bought it new in late Sept. 5K miles. Lots of white smoke (not condensation) from exhaust and CEL is on. WTH. From what I am reading, appears to be an oil seal in the turbo? Anyone else experience this?

I'm beyond bummed.

Thanks for thoughts on the issue.

Don't worry about it, just fix it. Oil seal in the turbo would be my guess too. I was at my buddys shop just yesterday and he was pulling the turbo from a CX-5 for a bad bearing. Apparently the price of the parts won't hurt too bad, but it's pretty tough to get the turbo out.

good luck!

Thanks, much appreciated!

You guys gonna be in Cali any time soon? Missed the last show at the Canyon Club.

2012 would be under warranty, no?

Is it white OIL smoke, or white COOLANT smoke? Does it smell sweet or acrid?

Both coolant and oil are present near the turbo, so a seal could be the culprit for either.

Either way, stop driving it immediately. Take it to the dealer and have it fixed.

I've had Speed3's since 2/2007 (2007 and 2010 models) and I've never had this (or any other issue). Take it to the dealership fast! Hopefully, your Mazda dealer is as good as ours and it will be taken care of... Good luck!

I cupped my hand over the exhaust. It's definately an oil smell. And there is a slight bluish tint to the exhaust.

Looks like I'll be calling roadside assistance to get it to the dealer.

Love the car otherwise!

Thanks

Cat and O2 might be bad if it is a lot of oil. Make sure they check/replace those.

Speed 3's turbo seals going is quite common. If it's under warranty they'll take care of it.

Yikes! Yeah, 5K miles on it, so under warranty.

Is there a better aftermarket unit? Sounds like this could be a serial issue.

While I don't hammer on the car, it's sold as a "sports" car and I drive it as such.

Seems kind of fragile.

I'm hoping your issue is resolved quickly. Like I have said, I have owned these cars since 2/2007 and have put 90k (collectively) miles on the cars and have never had any problems and certainly would characterize the car as "fragile" in any way!

BReif61 12-02-2012 04:39 PM

I had 57k on mine when I got rid of it; no issues either. Smoking turbos were a big problem when the car was launched, but the seals were redesigned for late 2008 so if they did go bad, it is a chance occurrence and not a chronic issue.

Didn't see any TSBs or recalls with a quick search: 2012 Mazda Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

Ok, work done, got the car back. Yep, blown turbo seals. The service guys didn't have an explanation as "that" problem was fixed a few years ago.

All taken care of under warranty.

Anyway, glad to have it back. Zoom Zoom.

Zoom zoom, indeed!!! Have fun!!

Can't beat the price! Glad it wasn't anything serious.

I hope they fixed the torque steer for you while they were in there. :D

I saw an 07 or 08 at Buttonwillow catch fire. Looked from the turbo. Wasn't pretty - had the fire go into the "firewall", flames out of the dash vents ...

Here - you don't see the car almost burn to the ground. Aftermarket turbo however. :)

Turbo Mazda3 engine failure while racing at Buttonwillow -- NCRC 11/21/2010 event
Stock Mazda3 engine w/ Mazdaspeed coilovers and GT2871R turbo, running in the solo group because it was my first time at this track. The car ran amazingly on the turbo kit without problems for 2.5 years, but decided this was its last session. Engine blows at 4:58 (shortly after a nice pass at around 4:15, into a pretty aggressive line through a fastish long right turn). Luckily, it happened in the esses and I was able to coast safely off the track and into the parking lot near the cold pits, without interrupting the session at all.

Turns out that wasn't a MS3, just a turbocharged 3, earlier year too.

On a side note, if you are interested in a cheap brake upgrade, you can swap out the rear caliper mounting brackets and rotors with ones off of a Mazda 5. The calipers are identical but it will give you about an inch larger diameter of a rotor.
