Google maps - New iPhone app

Seems to be a winner!

My only complaint: You need to pinch to change the zoom. There should be a +/- for one handed operation.

Christien 12-13-2012 04:57 AM

What, you can't pinch with one hand? ;)

Just got it this morning, looks good so far.

Got it. Looks just like Apple maps.;)

stomachmonkey 12-13-2012 05:32 AM

Got it this morning.

Located me 2 miles off of where I currently am.

Last version seemed simpler to use.

Setting up routing involved less steps, was more intuitive.

Meh, a bit disappointed.

In terms of look and feel, it's very similar to apple maps. Haven't been able to try out searching for poi yet. That will determine which app gets used. Apple has been taking me all over the world.

Porsche-O-Phile 12-13-2012 05:44 AM

Have had no issue with the Apple maps although I use waze for driving navigation anyway.

techweenie 12-13-2012 06:55 AM

Downloaded it last night. It's good to have it back.

iOS maps really weren't a big problem except the secondary streets were too faint for quick recognition, making it harder to use when driving.

RANDY P 12-13-2012 07:03 AM

does it do turn by turn voice?

gr8fl4porsche 12-13-2012 07:07 AM

yes

Head416 12-13-2012 07:41 AM

I've hated it for weeks. Search frequently sucks when I'm trying to find things. Last night I drove 30 minutes to a store that didn't exist! I ended up in a residential neighborhood in Santa Monica looking for a Walmart.

Should have known better.

Head416 12-13-2012 07:45 AM

And apparently I'm an idiot twice over because I just went on an IOS 6 Maps rant because I misunderstood the title. I'm gonna go download the new Google Maps app now.

Nothing to see here, go about your business.

Downlaoded and installed.

The main thing I have always liked about Google Maps was the color coding of even street level for speed. It lets me route around slow areas.

iOS maps only gave you a slowdown indication on major highways.

I used it today and so far, not a fan. Confusing interface. Too many hidden UI components that you have to dig for. I actually like Apple Maps.

EarlyPorsche 12-13-2012 01:49 PM

Try the free mapquest app. It does turn by turn, one hand zoom, and has traffic if needed. Its what I switched to when Apple released its proprietary maps.

speeder 12-13-2012 02:00 PM

How do I not get this? Is an automatic "upgrade" that will install in my iPhone w/o my input?

If you plug your iphone into itunes and upgrade to ios6 yes you will love google maps but can download again now in the app store. So upgrading to 6 now just does some improvements and you can regain google maps again.

That hurts my head!

Denis, if you have iOS 6, you can download the new Google Maps app free in your iTunes app store. Then, transfer it to your iPhone.

Hugh R 12-13-2012 07:50 PM

I downloaded it today at a meeting with Wi-Fi, seems OK. I like having two or three map apps, Some good at one thing, others are good at another. They're free, what do you expect?
