Cheap Slide / Neg Scanners any good for old car pics

I have seen quite a few sub £100 ebay and pc world chinese slide (&film) scanners and would like to get one for my father for christmas.

He has thousands of slides and although both of us a professional photographers his slides are old 60's & 70's that he usually just email's to his friends or posts on facebook, maybe the odd small (6x4 / 8x6) print. Normally he gets the odd batch of a hundred scanned but some of them are so scratched and the output is so small it seems hardly worth the cost, hence I though this might be a good idea.

Has anyone used them (eg Ion), are there any one that are worth a punt or any one worth avoiding? I know they won't be imacon standard thats not the point!!
