Schools and Police stations
In response to the concern for placing guns in the hands of teachers and school admin, What do yo think of this idea.
How about instead of building new free standing police stations the next one to be built in your town gets attached to a school. I know it may not work in all towns but some are better than none. Also any new schools get built with new police stations.. |

Yeah that's not a pan (teachers with guns) I thought they were looking at armed guards at schools like Air Marshals?

So we are going to spend billions of dollars militarizing schools for something that might happen once every 15 years? Do we really want a TSA-like organization in our schools?

In older parts of the country the infrastructure is already established. In my area (suburban DC) we have two big police stations for the whole county. The point of the police is that they are out and about.
I have been out here 8 years and in my little area, they have built 2 brand new Elementarys and a High School. The population of kids is growing so fast, they are ready to rezone the one that's been open 2 years already.

Albemarle County has what is called a resource officer in every school. This person is a cop, complete with a full compliment on his belt, and a squad car outside. We have had this for twenty years and violent crime in our schools is almost non-existent. Yes it costs us taxpayers for this, but these are OUR kids and nothing is ever said about the program. In the long run it is pretty cheap security and allows the administration to focus on their job.

school
Your area fits perfectly into what I'm thinking. Why not add a police station on the back side of any of those new schools? We are going to continue to build schools and police stations lets combine them.
My concern is that if we as conservatives don't lead the conversation to inhibit gun violence in schools the least conservative among us will continue to present ideas that will only take rights away from those that already don't respect the laws in place. |

What about when a registered sex offender is booked.......he'll be closer than 500 feet to the school......

My town has at least 12 schools and 1 police station. That would be a lot of police stations.

1 national guard at each school? 1 off duty cop paid overtime? and a comp day, cheaper than hiring one for each school.

Lets just skip the foreplay and give everyone a gun.

I was talking with an officer friend about this the other day. He mentioned that the cost of a uni officer in his district (with a car) costs about $110/hr. So, I did the math for Colorado. $110/Hr x 8hrs = $880 $880 x 180 School days a year = $158,400 per school 1,817 Public schools in Colorado = $287,812,800 per year. For one officer at each school. Cherry Creek High school, where my brother's kids go to school, has an 80 acre campus. 1 guy isn't going to help a whole heck of a lot. Seems to me that $287.8M could be better spent. That's great, but if you look at the statistics, violent crime in schools is almost non-existent in general. I suppose it would be interesting to compare your statistics vs. the rest of the country to see what it looks like.

We have a much smaller area. We have three small high schools in the county.
One policy isn't going to be the answer for every locality, which is a big part of the problem.

Gogar, were you talking with him about a resource officer specifically, or a police officer in general? I'm curious about the actual cost, but I don't see the cost as a problem because resource officers are common in many areas, and the cost seems to be okay.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about a uniformed officer with a car.

I can think of at least 25 school buildings of some sort in my county all spread over a 150 sq mile area and there is no extra money for an expensive officer in each school, we can barely get enough to take care of the grounds and salaries.
My idea is to offer a deal to all the teachers in the county who choose to participate to free conceal/carry classes along with a $400 9mm handgun and holster. If 200 teachers took the county up on the offer, it would cost about as much as only ONE (1) fully trained uniformed "resource officer" like GOGAR described in a previous post on this thread. |

A police station in each school?
What could possibly go wrong?

Police officers as resouce officers at schools have been around for a long time in CA. My best friend did that for awhile. I guess they still do that. He wore his uniform & had his car there. As a former teacher and having worked at other positions in many different schools, I say giving teachers guns is the worst idea in the world. You can't imagine what a loony lot they are.
