External PC hard drive - can't 'see' contents?
I've got an external Seagate hard drive (ST3160026ARK) (was my daughters's). She used it back up files from her MAC.
I want to wipe it clean and/or reformat it. I've plugged it into my Dell desktop (via usb cable) and fired it up. It shows up as a mass storage device, not as an actual drive and I can't see the contents. How do I go about wiping this? Thanks |
I use Windows Disk Manager to do this... Don't know which version of Windows you have, but go to "Disk Manager" and if you see the drive, you can "initialize" and format it. Just be careful and be sure you've selected the right drive!

Windows disk manager, delete existing partition(s), re-create them, and format them.

Thanks guys. I'm running Windows 7.
I've found the drive in Disk Manager and deleted the partion. I now have two boxes for the drive: 200MB Healthy (EFI System Partition) 148.86GB Unallocated However, I can't find any options to initialize the drive or recreate a new partition and format it. Thanks |
Try EaseUs partition manager. Free to download and works well.

You can right-click on the "unallocated" partition and create one...
