Hey imcarthur-

Do you think the extra cost of the RX100 is worth the additional performance you'd get vs the next in line down in the pocket camera segment?

If you are up to the Leica price point you should take a look at the Sony RX-1.

For me - yes. I wanted small, simple & awesome & the Sony gives me that. The only other cam I looked at & seriously researched was the Panasonic LX7 which was $200 cheaper. If it had a similarly sized sensor, I probably would have bought that.

whether it is worth it depends on your price sensitivity and likelihood of carrying a DSLR with you

you can bet that 1-2 years from now the RX100 type camera will be sold for less and be available from several manf.s

Exactly. Sony have a winner & everyone will rush in over the next 18 months catching up. I put the expense in our travel budget for this year. It will pay for itself as my secret weapon in Morocco. Since they are a camera-shy people, I should be able to get shots with a small camera that I couldn't take with our intimidating DSLR.

I agree too... Sony has no real competition yet...

I'm going to wait to see what comes out in the next six months in the large sensor pocket camera segment.

Who has the best price for the Sony? Amazon is selling at $648 . That's an amazing $1 off their regular price of $649. I know Sony tries to hold their retailers to Sony's set pricing, but someone must be aggressive. I really don't want to wait six months for a bargain...

$589 shipped from here:

42photo.com - New York Camera Store, Digital Cameras, Audio and Video Electronics

never bought from them though....

I paid $699 CAN which is US retail + our north of the border toll.

And don't forget a UHS-1 SD card for fast writing. 32GB another ~$40 . . .

They will try - here is the problem: It used to be that an advantage went to camera co.s who made their own glass (Nikon). Now, it is the co.s that make the CCDs (sensors) - Sony is the main one. So, they can delay sales to others of their newest, greatest sensors.

^^ Ah, I see they finally have the finger grip on the housing. I've been looking for something like that to attach to the 230. Nearly slipped out of my hand a few times and always warning others about it when handing it over. Great little pocket cam for the buck. Cheer's- Scott

If you have spare miles built up with United Airlines you can buy the RX-100 through their online shop.

The only annoying thing is the flash which rises from the camera right where your left fore finger wants to rest.

I liked this one because of the manual focus. However, actually using the manual focus requires some skills not to select the inside buttons which control other functions. I do not possess this skill.

I've had the Panasonic LX3 and the Canon S95 both of which are pretty good. While I sometimes miss the 24mm (full frame equivalent) of the LX3 the sensor on the Sony RX100 more than makes up for it. I also love the sweep panorama feature:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357423050.jpg
