Try looking for an old Keen Kutter if you want the full size double head. I have an old Winchester hatchet that I use for kindling, you can find those at gun shows for around $25-50. If you want full size, maybe just buy an axe head on Ebay.

If you are splitting wood you want a splitting maul. If you are chopping down a tree, you want an axe. If you are chopping down a tree and don't want to kill yourself wasting time and energy, you want a chainsaw.

I have 2 axes I use regularly. One a singlebitted kind of a +P version of a hatchet, and a full-sized doublebitted. Fantastic tools, great for limbing a log, or clearing brush. But other than kindling, I've never used one to split firewood, and that's my primary source of heat.

bet cha didnt know this FACT.......................... to enter ANY U.S. FOREST YOU MUST HAVE A SHOVEL and a AXE and WATER to put out your fire. even if YOU dont have a fire. once again to enter ANY/ALL U.S. FORESTS(and yes not all forests are green a "forest" can be dezert) YOU must have a shovel/axe/water...............PERIOD! get poopy with da ranger danger...............and he will slap you with a FEDERAL TICKET so fast it will make yer head spin. me? i'm a PULASKI kind of guy. NUPLA baby! fiberglass handled(replaceable) in all vehicles along with a NUPLA shovel rd point. case in point: this clown that used to work where i worked dragged his kids and wifey up to flagstaff. typical gaggle of screaming kids. they decided to go "hiking". left UNATTENDED FIRE! ranger danger comes along, takes every last beer/soda/water and drenches fire OUT COLD as any good lil ranger danger should do. then places FEDERAL ticket on his windshield. a few hours later ranger danger, comes by again. this clown flags ranger danger down, gives ranger danger a load of CRAP about using all of his liquids to extinguish fire. ranger danger had ENUFF of his crap, and nailed him on NO SHOVEL/NO AXE! had to go to FEDERAL MAGISTRATE and PAY $1000 FINE! hahahahahahahaha. we still laugh about that one. go to wildland fire fighting equipment, and take yer pick of fire tools. last a bazzillion years if taken care of. get a file also and a cover for yer pulaski or axe. saves ripping yer skin or other items.

Lane beat me to it. We have purchased some demo tools and one axe sitting in my garage use by firemen. The quality on them is second to none. YOu pay for it, but well worth the money.

If you want old made in USA, check out garage & estate sales...especially in small towns, rural areas. Hatchet for splitting kindling, Maul for splitting rounds...Axe for making teen scary movies...
