Porsche factory.

Fun to watch, but allow 47 minutes.

Enjoyed it. Thanks.

After seeing this, sort of neat to watch 'Built By Hand' from the old factory Porsche days. (Should be some youboob links out there)

I agree with that, the Black Forest old world craftsmanship is a joy to watch.

(What I took away from watching this factory build cars is how efficient it is. I especially liked the engine building fixtures.

I wonder how this approach to modern car building contrasts to the modern Ferrari factory?

Agreed.
I just think it would be fun to see the way Italians approach the design of a modern assembly line contrasted with the Germans.

I'll check out YouTube when I get the chance.

I saw a documentary on the new Ferrari assembly plant and was impressed. The roof has massive areas of glass for natural lighting and inside the plant looks like an atrium with trees and bushes interspersed with the assembly areas to give a better feel to the place for the workers and better air quality and attitudes.

The engine assembly was hand built by individual craftsmen who took great pride in thier work and applied a personilzed placque with the builder's name on it, rather like the Corvette Z06 assembly room, where the customer can actually build and dyno his own engine under the watchful eye of a trainer/assembler.

the original 911 was made from stamped body panels - this was a big improvement over the 356 as it allowed "high volume" manf. and the unit body was much stiffer too

Not to take the attention away from the Porsche flick but does anyone know where to find the early footage of the BMW M Werks? In the late 1980's I was at a US dealer meeting where they presented some great insight on the handbuilt, blueprinted and balanced engines. Craftsman / builders pride was demonstrated by showing off the care of their tools, fixtures and then onto the near perfect tolerance (go - no go rejected parts) for each individual engine. Race motor built for production cars shipped off to the showroom. Those were some bargain buy days for true hand crafted cars.
