bad head gasket on my jeep?
i have a 99 grand cherokee with an inline 6. there is oil seaping out between the head and block on the right side. time for a head gasket?
it never over heated but has 190k on it. |
The head gasket can be bad without over heating.....sounds like it just gave up the ghost at the edge of a cylinder.........those old I6 are pushrod right? No messing with timing and the parts most likely quite cheap might as well do the other seals in the head and valve seals as well. ....still shouldn't be $100 in parts and a good saturday afternoon project

thats what i was thinking. machine work will be the big expense.
|
Happens all the time on the 4.0, pull the head have it checked by a machine shop. They crack between cylinders 3 and 4 if they do. At the very least it will need to be decked. Think it was $80 for the gasket kit, $40 for new bolts and about $100 for the machining including two or three new valves.
Easy job really, lots of room to work. |
I knew somebody that had this on a older BMW ( 525i I think) but it was engine coolant. All it needed was a new head gasket.
|
Alot of the 4.0's do it. Doesn't affect the way they run or longevity. Just makes a mess.

190k?
Meh, half life. Fix her up 'n go again. I miss my '92 XJ. |
99-02 4.0 cracks between 3 and 4. The older 4.0 you couldn't hurt. Not a tough or expensive repair.
