Going skiing!
Driving up to Heavenly, (south Tahoe), today with a buddy to ski for 4 days. I haven't skied in decades but grew up skiing a lot. The snow is as good as it gets up there, they get mega-dumps in a normal year and this year is stellar.
I'm going to rent the latest equipment and try a few different skis, just take it easy and try to enjoy thyself. I'll try to post some pics, because of course "this thread is worthless w/o pictures". :D |
Sounds fantastic! Interested to see how you do and feel after that much time off. I lived in Colorado for ten years and skied a lot then. Took a bunch of years off after moving, and my wife and I were pretty rusty. New equipment makes a big difference, but skiing, like anything, uses different muscles in different ways.
Lots of pics and a full report would be inspiring as I sit here in the Midwest!! JA |
Stretch out really well, before, during and after. If you start getting tired, head to the lodge, not chair lift. There has been a ton of snow, and it has been cold. I am babysitting my grandkids so the daughter in law can go skiing with her mom today, not sure where they are going. Actually I think they get better snow at Alpine Meadows or Kirkwood. Kirkwood has twice as much snow as Heavenly a lot of the time. I just checked, they do have about that right now. It is way to hell and gone down the road from Tahoe, pretty drive to get there though.
I highly recommend dinner at Harrah's around sunset for the view. Very pretty drive over to Emerald Bay too if you are so inclined. |
Yeah I just rolled out of bed,, trying to decide between Mt Rose and Heavenly this am..
|
I went skiing last year (Mammoth) for the first time in about 17 years. It was a lot of fun. But I'm having trouble wrapping my brain (and wallet) around the cost of it all.
Have a blast. Stay safe. Don't eat the yellow snow. And watch out for the snow bunnies. |
Went yesterday, not Heavenly but as good as can be expected back east. Good skiing in the southern Adirondacks of upstate NY. A little stiff this morning but otherwise fine.

Ditch the sticks and rent a board!
|
Hey Richard...I'm 48. Too late to try to pick up boarding? My son is 11 and does it well, and I would love to be able to ride with him. Just a little nervous about starting over, and the fear that falls hurt much worse than they used to.
Thoughts? JA |
I'm 50 and still learning. It hurts, but definitely worth it. My advice: chest armor, wrist braces and good padded shorts.

Just got back from a week in Tahoe last night. The weather is great, the snow is soft, life in Tahoe is good right now. Have a great trip.
|
Just got back from Northstar. It was beautiful. You're gonna get some blue sky days at Heavenly. A picture from the top of the mountain with the lake in the background is a MUST.

+1 on motion's wrist guard recommendation. Maybe not a guarantee against injury, but at the same time I've seen a host of wrist injuries from snowboard/skateboard accidents. Sometimes these can be injuries with permanent sequelae.

Lastly, what is sequelae? JA |
Rei has snowboarding wrist guards and armor on their site....

Nice. I'm putting a warm up run in right now in Wisconsin. I leave on Thursday night for 3 days at Alta and Snowbird.
Enjoy |
I'll take any or all of it... downhill, boarding and now getting back into telemark.
BTW: Any Pelican here who has experienced backcountry cabin stays? Found this old link: Dawson's Ski Photography & Huts Article |
Wrist, chest, head injuries? Unless I was tipping more than a few and felt like Bode Miller, that would be the day when to drag out my motocross gear for some downhill.
I haven't adapted to any guards and yet have had my share of knucklehead crashes. Now age begins to be my safety barrier and know what not to do or where to go. Seems like helmets are the norm. Hopefully will never have some airborne kid come out of nowhere and nail me... LOL. |
Just bought my 7yo a ski helmet for sledding / tubing / skating. and skiing. I haven't been on my Burton for years, but will have a helmet when I do. Conditions around here are generally hard packed with ice.
can't wait to get my family out west skiing. have fun. |
