Refresh Memory - Pink Pig Story

SmileWavy
I was looking at some of my pictures that I have & I came across one of the Pink Pig that I took at Rennsport 111. How did the Pig get its name? Tell me the story.
Sorry its a slow winters night waiting for the Packers game.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357430081.jpg

Isn't it obvious? Each section of the car is named in German after each section of a pig like you'd order it in a butcher's shop.

What little I remember about the name & I'm not positive, the first time the team managers saw the car they referred to it as a pig. Thus the pink color & the outlined cuts of pork on the car. The car then became known as the pink pig. Not sure if thats how it got the name but thats how the story goes that I remember.

I believe the "pig" name was because of the way it looked just in white for the aero testing for Le Mans. The ever so wacky Germans painted it pink with the butcher cuts labeled on it.

The Pink Pig is my 8 year olds daughter's favorite car. I am sure in 8 more years I will be painting her car in the same livery.

They had a penchant for crazy paint schemes. Another one was the "hippie car"

Long story short... Porsche contracted with the French company SERA to design new bodywork for the car. In that era, low drag was the holy grail, which is why the 917 debuted in 1969 with somewhat evil handling. This later car was an attempt to get low drag numbers of the first version with acceptable stability. Since the Porsche styling guys didn't get to do the shape of the car, they were allowed to choose the paint scheme. You can guess what they thought of the look of the car...

Thus, Bertha, the truffle pig of Zuffenhausen was born...

Porky was taken from the 911 tech forum and thought it worthy for the repost. (I'd like to see more pics of it and without the dumpster in the background.)

The swine scheme is growing on me. Could see a little enhancement by airbrush. Add some fat cooked grizzle on the wheel arches...L
