Who is handy in So. Cal? House Stuff?

Well, I am officially in my new to me home and awaiting the first mortgage payment. However, I have discovered a few things that come with home ownership that need some love and would love to dabble with the professionals. So I ask my fellow car brethren, what's your forte? Of course, I am on a small budget but would love your advice and assistance. I am a handy guy but only an amateur at best.

1) Definitely some electrical demons. Breakers, plugs and lights not all working.
2) Wood gurus, probably need to change out some roofing wood. I personally don't like the tall ladders much.
3) Flooring gurus, need to redo some broken tiles etc.
4) HVAC, have some challenges, heater is from 1967 and could use some creativity.
5) Working on making more room in the garage to bring the P-car home but not until all the decor is up. I have my broken fuch that will be there and my car seats so far.

Electrical, tiles, and woodworking, no roofing though. Though you should be careful:

To paraphrase the relative license law/penal code: Any person or legal business entity who performs work in a construction related field AND the total value of the work to be completed (INCLUDING TIME AND MATERIAL) is equal to or exceeds $500.00, a valid contractor's license issued to that individual or entity is required in order to protect the consumer and the "handyman/contractor." Penalties for contracting without a license can range from a warning to jail or prison time depending on the magnitude of the offense.

All right dude, I will see what I can do for you. I can walk you through as much as I can and coach you through your DIY fixes through out the home. Hopefully save you some money by DIY. If not, I can give you phone numbers to people I know that are not flakes. On some fixes, you can use the flakes, because they can save you lots of $$. Youjust have to tell them exactly what you need them to do. If not, I can help with the yelling and the screaming

Describe your electrical issues. What year is the home? What do you mean "all"?

Why do you think you need to change the lumber / roof sheathing? PIc please.

Pic of broken tile. That should be an easy fix.

Keep using the HVAC until it dies is my advice unless it a ready dead. what are you thinking of doing when you say creativity?

More room in the garage? Extension or just cleaning crap up and throwing them away?

Jeff

The best way to check to see if you have shut off the correct breaker before any electrical work, is to touch your tongue to the wires, like you would to test a 9V battery.

Listen to Jeff. He's very knowledgeable with this stuff.

Roofing is hard, dangerous, work. If your not comfortable on ladders, you should write checks.

Wiring is not that hard.

Tile work is not that difficult, but don't discount the skill of the pro. My cousin does my tile work, and she is a bad ass. My tile work looks pretty 1980s Soviet Russia compared to her's. If your going to do a small repair yourself, keep in mind that you will likely spend more on the tools to do a competent job than the cost of having a pro repair it. Full replacement you might be able to save yourself some $.

HVAC, open check book, have pro do work. Consult Yelp.com or Angieslist.com for references.

Hey Dave, how did the big old piece of bench toop work out for you. In the middle of it, you can get a big chunk out and its is clean. I have two more that are cleaner. One is really, really clean, but your dad did not even want to see it.

Jeff, it's still leaning against the tree. Long story. I hope I can get a friend to help me with it this week.
