Trying to help a fellow Pelican

A good friend here in No. Cal has an 85 Cab which he took excellent care of. Has about 50K on the clock. He, sadly, had a stroke in July and is now back in Michigan with his family and in a care center for patients with Alzheimers. He lost his license and will live there til the end. I guess he's in pretty bad shape.

I just need to get an idea of the value of his car. I'll be getting pics pretty soon and will post an ad in Cars for Sale page of this forum. I'm thinking mid 20's but if it will go higher it will help the family pay for his care. He had only Soc Sec and a pension from his union. He also had a Hummer which is being offered for sale on flea bay.

In Doug's younger days he lived in the SF East Bay and work as an electrician. He built some race cars and was a good wrench. He was also friends with Bruce Anderson. Sad to see him in such bad shape. :(

Dang. That sucks. I know Doug. That's a great cab too. Just sent him a Christmas card.

vash 01-08-2013 11:07 AM

doug? dont know him.

i can however, do a pre-sale cleaning like a fool!! let me know if you need any help..maybe a good cleaning will generate a better sale. dunno.

Drdogface 01-08-2013 11:16 AM

Yeah, Jeremy...he lived in Tampa for a long time then moved here. He was not active on Pelican..or not very active. Don't even know his user name anymore...somethingCab I think..

The car has been detailed and he kept it pristine too. Don't think it needs a thing, but thanks Vash.

What's the deal with this new STAR smog BS here now?

Is this a new way to rape us? I heard that there are cameras now to make sure the right vehicles are being tested. I feel bad for those who invested the time and the huge money in their business only to find out that it will change every few years and have to get stuck with having to purchase new equip. I have to take my car to one of those goddamn place. I know it wouldn't pass.

Mark, wasn't Chocoholic considering a Carrera Cab?

Might be the perfect car for keeping him out of a 560SL :D

Where in Michigan is he?

I'll look that up and post it....somewhere around Bloomfield I think. His last name is Kubany.

He is on the fourth floor of an asst living facility. That floor is all for serious A'heimers patients with significant dementia probs. It may help to have some visits but I hear that some days he's pretty grumpy and 'out there'. Dunno if the place is even set up to allow visitors on that floor besides family. I'll ask his daughter what she thinks.

Drdogface 01-08-2013 02:14 PM

Yep, that's the car. He sent me a pic years ago which looked just like that.. I really feel for him..Thanks for finding and posting that. I'll place an ad later when I get pics from the guy who is taking care of the sale of this and his H3.

I appreciate all the help and caring here. Doug was a good friend here and I miss him.

Sorry to hear about your buddy.

I think mid 20's might be a tad high, but hard to say without more details on the car and the condition its in. A quick look in the Cars For Sale section here shows 1985 911s being asked from $12K - low $20's.

I have an '85 Targa (East Bay, CA) and figure I could get high teens if I were to try and sell it this spring. Mid $20's would get my attention if the market has come back that far.

aigel 01-08-2013 02:34 PM

What's the cars history in terms of location? Has it been a CA car or has it been in the South as well?

Are the 50k miles documented (i.e. with maintenance / smog receipts) and does the car reflect them in condition?

I think $25k is steep. That's G50 money at best. I would ask less than $20k. Too bad the car isn't local. I am jonesing for an SC or Carrera Targa / Cab and a low mileage example would be nice!

Edit: Sorry to hear about your buddy's bad health Drdog.

If its close to the way Doug usually kept his car then I think low 20's would be doable.

Drdogface 01-08-2013 02:40 PM

Yeah, I'm hearing that 20 is about tops these days. Was a day that they could get mid 20's. It was in the Tampa area for a while...not sure how long then here in N. Ca. Always garaged and very well cared for. Doug was a fanatic about the care of his cars. I know he has a stack of records but I don't have them in front of me. If you are really interested I had Choc's truck shipped to me from Ga. in an enclosed trailer for about 1600. I just got tired of all the emails from shippers and took this one but others came in lower later on.

Chocaholic 01-08-2013 02:42 PM

Already bought a 560. Honestly, about half of the cost so probably couldn't have done it anyway. First of 3 starting college this year!

aigel 01-08-2013 02:43 PM

Mark,

Here is a comparable car - more miles but looks like excellent history. Isn't selling at $18k. Of course you never know what the stories are behind a car and some may not look as good in person as they do in pictures:

Mark, I just sold a 1986 Carrera Cab for one of our customers recently. Near perfect car with a fresh top end over haul. Sold it for $21,500.00 That was the bleed price on the car at the time. (two months ago) Also, it went out of the country.
Here is the link that I had here for it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/682480-1986-carrera-cabriolet.html
