"Upgrade" to iOS 6.01? Or stick with 5.1.1? Whadaya think?

Alright guys. I've been putting the "upgrade" off for quite some time now. I've heard bad things about the Apple map (which ultimately got the guy who headed that project fired, btw) and a few other things. What do you folks think? Should I finally go for it? Or not?

I have a six month old iphone 4S, btw.

Give me your opinions.

Upgrade. And while you are at it, you can reload Google maps - it has been made available again.
Been using iOS 6 for months now with no issues.

iOS 6.01 runs fine on my 4S. Apple Maps also worked well the times I've had to use it, but as Z-man stated you can download the Google maps app if you want.

It has been great on my 4s since I upgraded when it was released.

Even works well on a 3S...but as posted, needs Google Maps.

Us there a compelling reason why I SHOULD? Does it seem faster? More stable? Less battery hungry? Less of a memory hog?

Because you have to get rid of that shiny red badge icon with the number 1 in it! That drives me nuts. I have to update everything when I get a badge. Lol

Google maps is not ready for ipad yet though.

Worked fine on my 4 before upgrading to a 5. Reload Google Maps and YouTube and away you go.

I'm just trying to upgrade my 3gs os to 4.2.x so I can install some apps I want. Theres no "upgrade" in general settings.

fintstone 01-12-2013 06:20 AM

If you plug your 3GS phone into the USB port of a computer with Itunes, it will ask you if you want to upgrade tp 6.0.1. Then just follow the prompts. It is backwards compatible to almost all aps.

After delaying for a long time, I finally upgraded. I waited until Google maps and YouTube were available again. Turns out I like Apple maps fine, and the new YouTube application is awful. Otherwise, no issues. Except one strange thing. Our family all started getting each other's iMessages. Turns out this is a configuration issue, which can be solved with some effort. If anyone is having that problem, I can tell you what to do.

Now my issue is whether to upgrade to an iPhone 5. I would like one, but am very irritated by the new Lightning connector. We have a house full of iPhone docks, audio players, chargers, and cables using the old 30 pin connector. The $30 that Apple is charging for the adapter is excessive. Yes it has a DAC chip inside, BFD, that chip costs 50 cents.

There were two big reasons not to upgrade: the new maps app and the loss of the built-in Youtube app. Both of those issues have been fixed (the new Youtube app is great, in fact).

How about waze for the map/navigation feature?

jyl 01-13-2013 07:13 PM

Waze is great. The alerts for accidents, police, slow traffic, etc are nice.
