Need info from the brain trust. New PC.
 

I need to replace a 6 year old Dell Dimension 3100 PC at work. It has started acting a bit flaky. I have had zero problems until now. I need to run MS Office and Quick Books, this is strictly a work PC so bells and whistles are not needed. My first thought was just to go with another Dell. What do you think of Windows 8? I am thinking of sticking with Win. 7 if available. Go with another Dell or is there something else I should look at?

I had been a loyal Dell user for years (both desktop and laptop). I wavered ONE time when I was looking for a super-power house of a laptop (it was between Dell's Alienware and ASUS's G73). I had nothing but problems with the ASUS and was constantly experiencing freeze ups and loss of data with that computer. It was sent back and supposedly repaired. During the time while ASUS had my computer, I replaced it with a new Dell laptop. I will not deviate from Dell again.

I have no experience with Windows 8 so I cannot respond to that question.

I have had my Dell 15" inspiron for about 3 years now. It is getting sluggish. Possibly needs cleaning out. Anyway I have taken over my daughter's Toshiba satellite 13" which is about 6 years old and works well. I have bought her a Samsung which she uses for university. Don't know that much about software but likely will buy a Samsung, Sony or HP laptop next time. I don't buy extended warranties.

Most people I have talked with perfer Windows 7 over Windows 8. Windows 8 seems to be a leap forward in design interface. Some people claim they have trouble navagating around because it was designed more for tablets and touch screens. Windows 7 is like Vista, XP, and to a certain extent 2000 and Win 98 SE. Before I bought a new machine I would check to see if all the programs you run are compatable with 8. You can always buy a full copy of Windows 7 if you can't get anything installed but 8 and don't like it. Go to a retailer and try out Windows 8 before you make a decision though.

Some people don't like propriority systems like Dell and HP because they feel it limits the ability to upgrade things like video cards. I have found that they are usually good for what they state they can do. For the programs you are running, a Dell is just fine. Get as much memory as the system can hold and get the best processor for the money you can afford. If the memory is too much from Dell, go to pricewatch and check the prices there.
