James- I beleive Oracle suggest to remove any old version of Java before a new version install anyhow. The disable function is on ver. 7 and NOT 6.

Whats the latest with this? I keep getting prompts that there is an update available. Is it safe to update now and re-enable?

Java announced an update on Sunday, Jan. 13th. On Monday, Jan. 14th, the Office of Homeland Security restated its warning to disable Java as the update did not completely solve the problems. I assume the update prompts you receive are from the still suspect version.
