Anyone know what type of grease goes in the gearbox of a Kitchenaid stand mixer?

Anyone know what type of grease goes in the gearbox of a Kitchenaid stand mixer? Food grade, I assume, but what weight/type?

My wife's stand mixer stripped a gear. Haven't cracked it open yet, but will probably need a gear or two that costs $6-8 each. BUT, the repair involves buying a 1000 gram container of Kitchenaid Planetary Gear Grease which is going to cost $25 shipped! From what I've read the gearbox holds around 60 grams of grease!

Check McMaster for "food grade grease" - I think Dow makes some NSF moly grease...

I bit the bullet and bought the can of grease. I spent serious time looking for an alternative source online but could not find anything that was food grade and wasn't sold in bulk. The grease was the most expensive part in the $50 repair I undertook (stripped worm gear and follower).

I shopped at the mending shed MendingShed.com and the grease there is $17.95. They have the best prices from what I could gather.

I found some good repair videos online. The kitchen aid stuff is pretty rugged but after a few years of weekly bread dough the gears give up. They are easy to replace.

Any locals that ever need a shot of grease are welcome in exchange for a cold one.

Does it relly need to be food grade? It's not in contact with food.

Git some grease off from around the blown CV rubbers on the 911 and shove that in man LOL.

Not inconceivable one one of these, especially when using one of the attachments.

Thanks! You're my hero!

I'll PM you my address. From reading on the web I think there's a potential business opportunity here for selling this stuff in single serving sizes at a reasonable price.

You guys disappoint me.

All these replies, and no one has yet stated the obvious PPOT answer:

I just rebuilt my wifes kitchen aid pro 600. I think I used silicone caliper grease. After much research and not wanting to pay $18 for the little can I picked the caliper grease due to the lack of warnings on the label...
I should have come here first for recommendations!

Just so you know...NSF Grades of Lubricants:

NSF: A non-profit organization used as a third party to classify commonly used products. Their publication, “The White Book” lists companies and products that can be used in food plants. For lubricants, the food grade product designations are:

H-1: This designation indicates lubricants that may have “incidental contact” with the food product but no more than 10ppm.

H-2: This designation indicates lubricants that may not have any contact with food products.

H-3 (3H): These are products that can come in contact with food product without detrimental effects.
