Selling a used catalytic converter?

Is it legal?

I have two that I don't need.

Can I sell them for use in other states other than California?

Pretty sure you are okay if you sell them out of state, but Kalifornia is utterly screwed up, so you never know

I heard this went into effect, because it's hard to tell if the cat is still good, to protect the consumer. Others will see it other ways.

I have two good used cats that will pass smog.

What, do I have to ship them to my nephew in Reno and sell them from there?

What are they worth in scrap for the platinum?

How do you know if the cat is good or bad? Spending $150 (made up number), only to find out the "new" cat is also bad would suck. Especially since you probably could not return it.

How can every junk yard test cats? IS there a machine and can they all afford it?

In my experience, if the honeycomb is intact they work.
Whenever I have had issues, material was missing or completely gone.

They have precious metals in them. Platinum in most, some have Palladium also, iirc. But the carbochlorination process for recovering the metal from the honeycomb is beyond almost all but big reclaiming companies. There are other methods, such as smelting, that can be done in the backyard.

Whole scrap converters can bring anywhere from $10 to $200, depending on size, type, and other factors.

Some people like to fill up a drum with the cat guts (honeycomb, flake, or bead) and then sell the whole drum to a refiner. This nets more money, but is also more work.

(In the 90s I worked for a refining company that reclaimed the metals)

Oh... and the EPA says it is illegal to re-use a converter once it has been used.
EPA considers it a violation of the policy to install a used converter from a salvage yard or
sell it for reuse unless it has been properly tested and labeled. Similarly, it is a violation to install
an untested used converter brought in by a customer, even if the customer insists that the used
converter came off his/her vehicle.

The smog laws and CARB have FAR more to do with money than air quality. That is just a fact that is evident if you look at what they do and how they go about it.

You take a chance on all used parts. All of them. You could probably buy 10 used ones for less than a new one and find one that is good.

You cannot sell used catalytic converters anywhere in the U.S.
It's a Federal law

You can sell them for "Off Road Use Only" but that really leaves you open
It's just not worth it

Thieves steal the hell out of catalytic converters, and yes, they sell them all in the US.

Could be, but you can have your pick on CL. There's even a complete 996 Turbo exhaust including the cat.

I can understand the rules against selling cats out of a salvage yard, although some environmentalists might make a case for using anything that works. But, if the Feds are using any money to police private sales of cats, I think that's irresponsible.

IMHO, the more responsible the govm't tries to be, the more irresponsible they become.

If you can find me a single story of an individual being arrested for selling a (not a thousand) non stolen catalytic converter, i will send you a six pack of your favorite beer.

I tried to list a CAT on ebay and it got kicked out. It is a low-mile CAT that appears to be in perfect condition and fits 1983-1985 US Audi quattros. Since it is illegal to sell for use, I will sell it for $150 if you promise me you won't put it on your 83-85 quattro . PM me if interested in this piece of scrap metal.

I see cats being sold all the time, here and on eBay. eBay has a pretty good screen on illegal items for sale and will pull them.

I've been trying to get parts off of a dead cat for weeks...no bites.
