home stereo speaker options.

Budget:$2500. Open to nearly anything, I'm freakishly patient and am not an authority in the least. At this point, I'm liking vintage Klipschorns but they are really BIG. opinions?

For significantly less than that I would let my largest pair of vintage Polk SDA 1.2s go, but they are huge so I doubt you'd be interested. They're not for everyone (like Ian ). I drive 'em bi-amp and bi-wired with 1000 watts per 170 lb tower, and set up properly with the interconnect, they're jaw dropping rock 'n roll speakers from my youth. I'm keeping the two baby brothers...offer is open to anyone.

Nevermind . Seriously though, the wattage I use is for full sound, not volume, but they "can" as they can accomodate the whole 20-20K audible spectrum. Speakers are a very personal thing...some like Klips, Maggy's, but these (similar to a 911) were always my favorites.

First thing: Don't buy online unless you are after a specific model that you have heard. As Keith said, speakers are very personal. To make an educated decision, you can't believe reviews or marketing hype. We all lie but your own ears won't. Take a few good sounding CDs & hit some shops. PM me for suggestions near you.

In boxes, you should listen to: B&W, Totem, Paradigm, Focal
In panels: Magnepan & Martin Logan

Ian is "da man" when it comes to this stuff. I'm a rock 'n roll guy, but always liked to take a cd with a female vocalist to "test" speakers. Somewhat limited with R&R choices, I tend to use Natalie Merchant's "Tigerlilly".

I always thought tube amps had a "fuller" sound if that is what you are after.

Maybe try a nice pair of used medium to large Klipsch speakers with a tube amp.....like an old Eico or Dynaco... It's at least worth a listen.

I *really* enjoyed my Dynaudio's. You have to like that sound - but I recommend you look at them if you can. They should have some nice options in your price range.

Have you heard her "Leave Your Sleep"? Some excellent tunes - although she tends to get annoying after 3 or 4 songs . . .

No I sure haven't...I rarely "acquire" new stuff these days. At some point I realized there was no point as I already had more in the archives than I can possibly listen to. I do have a couple of her solo along with several Maniacs though amongst thousands of discs...'bout half commercial releases, and others of "live shows" (I've spent time as a "taper" and trader of bands that allowed taping). Back to speakers...are there still "places" where one can go in and listen to several of the fantastic names being offered on this thread? As we've all said, speakers are a VERY personal thing and depend upon what you like, that tends to influence one's preference imo. I've never had the opportunity to hear some of the awesome systems that you're involved with, nor "some" of the brands touted here, but I'd like too . For example, I prefer my selection over either MLs or Magnepans (both driven by a HUGE Krell "coffin amp"), and one of the sweetest I've ever heard was an "audiofile acquaintance's" 17 watt tube system with custom speakers I've never heard of (can't recall the name).
