You could pick up a whole .223 for around 8 before everyone went nuts...

That's part of where I am torn about this.

For me, I would rather have something like a .223 or 5.56, but I want my kids to learn on a .22 because the ammo is cheaper, and it will be easier for them to handle. I just didn't want something that I'd get bored with too easily. I find that I can keep up enthusiasm when I can tinker.

I am hoping that some of this craziness stops and prices come down a bit.

Then get a CA compliant AR with a .22 LR upper or conversion kit . . .

Prices should drop a little after the madness subsides. Long-term pricing will depend on how likely Feinstein's AWB bill is to pass; IMHO at this point it's touch-and-go. BTW, that bill specifically lists the .22 LR M&P 15 as an assault weapon.

EDIT: My bad; it's the Armalite M15 .22LR that's specifically listed, though all S&W M&P15s (therefore assuming M&P15-22) are listed . . .

How old are the kids? An AR15 style .22 is insane overkill if that's what you are looking for, and it may be too big for them to handle. I bought one of these for my 8 year old, he loves it.

A little older. I don't want them to use a kid-sized rifle. Plus, I will want to shoot it too. The M&P 15-22 is fairly light. The Ruger 10/22 might be a good bet. Reading up on it now.

Did you see Cliff's thread on a .22 from yesterday?

I have an M&P15 that I love. I believe the .22 is identical, just chambered for .22. I compared it to a similarly priced Bushmaster and found it to be much higher quality. I say why not buy one? It's great fun to shoot, and with .22 it would be cheap.

I just picked up a few M&P15s of various configuration last week and am really impressed with them. Found them at prebubble prices so they were ot much more than the .22 version. Do you have optics or hard sights?

Kaos...I don't know where you would shoot/store those, but would be afraid of having scary-looking guns for my kids if I lived in LA...even in a toy due to potential reaction. On the farm...likely not and might well consider one for practice due to cheap ammo since the feel is likely very similar to my .556 weapons.

Mine is the base model, it came with Magpul sights. Absolutely love it. Now if I could just find ammo.....

Right, buy it now (the STG .22) for $700. I've been waiting a year for them to show up, should wholesale for < $400 (but I don't know anyone who has one in stock).
