Calling German Travel Experts - Nuremberg
 

More travel planning - this time in Nuremberg in late May. Looks like we'll have the better part of a day and one night in Nuremberg before heading off to Ingolstadt the next day. Looking for suggestions of places to see, things to do, and places to eat.

We have been there before to do the Christmas market, so we have some familiarity. We've done the main square, some of the churches that were bombed/repaired, and a run around the castle. We've also done the parade grounds.

The Pelican braintrust always comes up with interesting ideas, so greatful for any ideas. Thank you!

A walk on the city wall gives a nice overview of the city.
If you were heading north I would suggest a stop in at Coberg Castle. They have an amazing arsenal there housing weapons from the middle ages thru to the mid 20th century. A fantastic look at how each new development in weapon technology generated new types of defense, etc.

Wurtzberg district was once ruled by various Prince/bishops that were early family members of my wife's family. Von Bibra is the name, you can see many mentions of the family at the castle in Wurtzberg. One named Conrad in the early 17 hundreds looks very much like my FIL also named Conrad, He is practically a neighbor of yours living in South Pasadena.
We will be in the general area ourselves at that time, staying at Brennhausen, a family place there. Goggle it to see if you will be close enough to stop in for a visit.

Nuremberg and Nürburg are two different places. :) I did not go to Nuremberg this last trip.

There, I chimed in.

I went to Nueremberg in May. I wasn't very impressed and found Bamberg to be time better spent. I think it's about 60 km. away.

I'm a little biased but I'll second Bamberg. I'm stationed there; well, when I'm not in Afghanistan. I'll be back there in March enjoying some good bier. There is zepplen field in Nueremberg, that was kind of cool.

Another vote for Bamberg.

Looks like Bamberg has unanimous support. We've made a quick stop there in the past, but very open to going back. I've got a bottle of rauchbier sitting on a shelf here - maybe that's an omen. So I'll ask the same question about Bamberg - any suggestions? Thanks.

Took the family to Germany (and Poland and the Czech Republic) for several weeks last summer. Did Nuremberg for a few hours on the way from Prague to Frankfurt to stop at the Zeppelin Field and the adjacent Documentation Center museum. Seeing the stadium where the Nazi rallies were held was both fascinating and disturbing. Stood on the podium and walked around reading the historical placards. The museum is quite good. Leaving, I explained to the kids that given what went on there, as well as the history of 1933-45, I had a knot in my stomach. Then I saw the adjacent boulevard was named for Yitzhak Rabin and it broke the knot and I laughed out-loud.
