Garage
Cherohala Sjyway

Got a wild hair and made a run this morning. From my garage, to the Skyway, up to the TN/NC state line and back in less than 3 hours and that included some stops at overlooks and a stop for gas. Some ice and snow at the top, but not a big deal...

Maybe they should rename it?

It's cool. Your fingers were probably still trembling from a nice drive on a winter's day. I started mine up to swap sides of the garage with my wife's van so I have more room for my drums.

I was tempted to take a short spin but our roads are covered with salt and snow.

Wow, you were able to make it over the peak after the winter storm that just came through...I'm shocked. A buddy and I left Chattanooga 7-8 years ago one Sunday morning heading back to "here". Didn't think nothing about it (i.e. no storms, etc.) and we were in tee-shirts at lower levels....got almost to the top, and suddenly we're in a frozen mess...even the occasional 4x4s were struggling. We couldn't make it up that last mile or so to the peak...had to turn around, "slid" back down a mile or so and backtracked around...added 3-4 hours on our return trip. Not in the 911...I would have been a nervous wreck . Beautiful car btw...and for others reading...the Cherohalla Skyway is a wonderful drive...gotta do it in the 911 some day!

Supposedly, the Skyway is closed up near the top due to a rock slide (kinda like 441). I never got that far. The road was starting to get slick (especially in the shade). The picture above was taken at an elevation of about 4500 ft, so I was still 700-800 feet from the top.

In about an hour on the Skyway, I saw about 5 cars, total. I basically had the place to myself. Awesome.

I envy you guys. For me that would be 24 hours door to door.

Gotcha...we saw maybe 3-4 others (4x4s) that day...if we'd have gotten into trouble, they couldn't have helped us either. So close to the top we could "smell it"...but it was not to be

nice to see you have a "Q-ship" type car that will never attract any notice from the police

The "Skyway" is pretty near the Tail of the Dragon...all the cops are over there . That area is so full of great roads...just pick a direction and go...just don't go over the side!

I've had one speeding ticket in 19.5 years of ownership and I deserved it. I was doing 95 in a 55 zone in the middle of nowhere Alabama and the state trooper wrote it up as doing 75...

Yeah, the Dragon is also about an hour from my house. This area is simply covered up with great roads. The funny thing is that roads to and from the Dragon are almost as nice as the Dragon. Heck, my drive to work is fun.

I love the skyway, any day of the week. Such a beautiful part of our country. When I drove it last there was hardly any cars at all.

I've heard good things about the Skyway. If the roads around here weren't so crooked I'd have been there by now.

No kidding Jim! You've got some damn fine roads over there. .

I once made a guy hurl on the road into jasper. Thank god he had me stop and didn't do it in the truck

Same reason my 911 hasn't seen the Skyway or the Dragon either...I don't have to go that far to find the hilly twisties...not "as" good, but close enough. Mike has it made on any road he chooses . You near the Ozarks? I've been to Fayetteville 4-5 times, but never had wheels.

Thanks for the picture. I haven't been there in 6 years and miss it greatly.
