Question Your "best ever" freebie

What's the best Porsche thing you've ever gotten for free.

I got a strut brace from my buddy Jack when he switched to the triangular brace.

About 30 years ago my Mom gave me a Porsche key ring. She said "I wish I was buying you the whole car." Well, I used the key ring everyday and bought the 911 17 years ago and both are going strong.

this 84 Euro was given to me after it caught fire in the POs garage,
the rear bumper burned off due to a fuel fire at the bottom of the tank.
It took about 4K to get it looking like this and it runs great

A guy gave me a '58 Carerra coupe about 30 years ago. It was a body shell, a transmission, and enough little bits to identify it as a Carerra. I traded it for a hood and spare front clip for my '56s "just in case."

An '88 924S with a bad oil cooler seal and a bad fan switch. It overheated and had oil in the coolant and the previous owner didn't want to deal with it. It was ugly as sin but a lot of fun to cruise around in...

My '78 911SC Targa...

...albeit in disrepair, it was a freebie, and that will never be forgotten.

Got a (minimally bent) chromed Fuch from kevinp73. It's hanging in my front yard as a garden hose reel. I received a dinged Cookie Cutter from TRE that's in my back yard doing the same duty.

Once again our sage Angela gets it right.

I was thinking the same thing when I read the thread title.

Great little community here at Pelican.

Thanks Wayne!

Well, there was this one time in the Alpha Chi house that comes to mind.

Oh. Porsche related! Oops. I got distracted on "freebie."

Please disregard.

I think the "free advice" has cost me around $40k. Without it, I'm not sure I would have made the initial purchase.

A friend, who is the owner of a P-car racing and restoration company did a complete rebuild of my SC motor and trans for free. I only paid for the parts, about $1,500 including new valves, bearings and machine work, etc. I did however, buy him a nice thank you gift.

My car above was advertised on Craig's List for over a month for $10K. Not the best pics in the ad, but you could make out early sport seats. It was 2 hours away in western MA and I couldn't ever get to see it. Emailing the owner a few times, all kinds of people were looking at it from all around New England. I was surprised it wasn't selling.

When I finally got a chance to get out to it, the car represented very well. Had the sport seats. Also had a 69T with Webers. Owner said it was hard to get moving so I assumed the 915 would need a rebuild. We got it running, I put it into gear and it just lugged. Owner came frantically running over to stop me, got out of the car and there's a huge puddle of gas just behind the driver rear wheel. We looked and the line had ruptured. I offered him $5K. He happily agreed.

Got the car home, found that the shift coupler bushings had disintegrated, so the car was going into 3rd, not 1st. Also found that the 915 was from a 77 and had been rebuilt and has a 7:31. With bronze bushings, it shifts like butter.

So not being a fan of sport seats, they are way too heavy, and not very comfortable, I sold those and the Fuchs to make the car "free." With a 3.2 and bars in it, and thoroughly lightened, it's a fantastic car, one of my favorites. Someday it will go back to Gemini Blue.

As I found it

Seats

Going home

When I bought my car the seller threw in a car cover and a couple of oil filters.

Ian sent me some free door speaker weather shields.

Janet - you seem to be a bit of a live wire... :-)

Get your minds out of the gutter. Seriously I have not gotten any freebies yet, I've just paid an arm and a leg for everything so far. I am, however open to freebies.
