You mentioned being able to read it in the dark... what about those watches with the tritium tubes?

any great, more budget friendly watches out there that meet my criteria?

this watch is amazing looking.

the IWC chronograph, top gun.

Thats the not just the IWC Fleigerchrono, its the Doppelchrono- split choronograph functions- and yes, its expensive. I have the less complicated Fleigerchrono (for about 15 years now) and if you decide on either of these- do consider the bracelet. Not only is it very good- its very expenisve to buy seperately. Leather bands arent. Also, Sinn make a very nice Fleiger- similar movement and style- less money.

EDIT Sinn 356 (from memory)

PPOT is great for helping people spend money. Last week I was contemplating my "need" for a watch when dressing up, and suddenly a watch thread appears! I've been using my phone for years but would like something nice. I really like those Sinn watches, you guys suck.

I do like these classic designs...
I would recomend trying to buy used to help with depreciation. If you find owning a expensive timepiece is not for you you should be able to resale it for not a lot of loss. If you like classic maybe look for a used Rolex Air King or Datejust. I'm not a huge fan of Rolex but they hold there value better than anything else in the market place so recouping cost is a lot easier when trying to resale.

I would also suggest buying a Quartz watch if your unsure about spending money on a watch. A mechanical watch will need to be serviced 3-7 years down the road and that can cost 500- to 1000 or more depending on the watch. A nice quartz watch will have the look and feel of its mechanical counterpart with out the expense of long term ownership. Its tough to own mechanical watches that cost less that 1000 because when it is time for service they are not really worth what it will cost to repair them.

I looked at these Longines in Scottsdale last week and they were fantastic for the price. Quartz models for around 1K.

I don't think you can go wrong. And they are underpriced since they don't have much middle men. Simple, just large enough to be current, and, or course, German made!

I have a drawer full of watches...

I would love to to own a Sinn, Omega, Tag, etc.

However my high end Seiko and Citizen's look and work just as good at a fraction of the cost.

Just to confuse you further have you looked at Tissot? This is my "high end" @ around $300:

My standby Seiko:

A fun copy made by a guy an Canada:

My "black" watch (everyone needs one ) Alba, a small offshoot of Seiko that sells only in Asia:

Another Seiko, nicknamed the "white night"

For something different (get a lot of comments on this one)

Love this one but it needs work, probably cost as much as I paid for it to get it working ($160):
